Indicators issue

Post by Shigsy » Wed Jun 19, 2013 11:06 am

My indicators started to work only intermittently, so I'd flick the switch to the side and it may or may not come on. Pressing it a few times would usually do the trick though one side seemed much less reliable than the other.

After a while it became less and less likely that I could get the indicators to come on at all until they simple seemed to stop working. Quite often I would flick the indicator switch, nothing would happen, I wouldn't reset it as it didn't come on and then 10 minutes later I'd be sitting at a set of lights and suddenly the indicator would come on. Similarly, I might turn the key one morning and and indicator would come on, as I'd clearly not reset it after it failed to come on the last time I tried.

So, I took the entire switch housing apart, sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner and it all appeared to work fine while still apart in my hand, flicking the switch side to side. Once put back together it seemed fine but started to go back to its unreliable ways again after only a couple of days and then stopped altogether.

Any ideas? :/ Thanks.

You'll prob have to take the actual switch apart and clean the contacts, they can get a bit corroded put some silicone grease on them when you put it back together. And as above deffo clean all the bullit connectors aswell, it could be a dodgey flasher unit, the one on me klr start doing the exact same thing, and its had a dodgey capacitor in the flasher unlt.

Firstly, thanks for the replies, very useful info. When I took the housing apart to spray with contact cleaner I tookt he actual switch apart i.e. I had about 6 small parts in my hand :) All seemed fine, no corrosion really, nothing obviously worn or broken. Put it back together but without the outer casing and could see the switch moving back and forward fine, with the indicators going on/off fine too. Just seemed to stop again a day or 2 later.

Ill check the bullet connectors as I don't think I did the first time round, and will try some silicone grease. If all else fails it sounds like it could be the relay maybe? like this one.

It's a common problem on nc30's, the switch contacts get worn. You can get a bit more life out of them by cleaning and slightly scuffing the surface to provide a better contact but it's a poor design and will eventually die again.

Consider fitting a new replacement, Chinese copies here (no idea what the quality or fit is like): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Left-Hand-Sw ... 8d2&_uhb=1

Thanks Cammo, handy to know it's a common issue. When replacing anything on the bike I really want to keep them official Honda parts so might see if I can source one online somewhere that isn't crazy money. That Chinese one does look a good match... any idea how much a Honda one is? :/
