that doesnt sound so bad tbh.
have you put the probes together with nothing connected.. if you get anything above 0 then you need to subtract this from your final reading.
could be the sign of a poor battery or bad earth though.
try coils if you have some spares but i dont think that will help..
a full charage of the abttery with a smart charger (even though its high voltage) might help..
