guess whos back with more problems.

Post by xivlia » Mon Apr 22, 2013 2:46 am

Okay, so for the past month or so, the bike has been flawless, been riding it everyday pretty much, and no problem.

today, for the first time, i noticed some problems.

The bike first starts with one click in the mornings, i went into town, took about 5 minutes, i saw my friend and i pulled over and stopped the bike, he wanted to hear the bike, so i turned the ignition on and when i clicked, it sounded like the battery was pretty low...like it was cranking slower than it should, so i turned it off, waited 30 seconds, and tried it again, and same thing... still low cranking power.

i got off the bike, pushed it backwards and forwards a few times, and tried it again, and viola! high cranking power, and the bike started again..... what could be the cause of this, i assume its a symptom of some sort of electrical problem, and i want to fix it before it gets worse. and one more thing, i went home, and turned the bike off and right after tried to start it up again, and still wont fire up, but this time it had high cranking power. i tried again after 1 minutes rest, and it worked.

The bike has a brand new battery on it, and a CBR 125 reg/rec. could alternator be a problem?

Why a CBR125 rect/reg, IMHO I would expect that the alternator output from an NC30 would be greater than that from a 125.

Sounds like bad connection somewhere in the starting system, but start a first principals.

Measure the battery voltage with engine running. Should be 14-15VDC at 5000 rpm. Less than 14 then rect/reg, alternator or wiring suspect. More than 15 then rect/reg suspect.

If charging system ok then you can move onto the starting system.

As you'd only ridden five mins I guess it's not out of the question that the battery might have been a bit low, and sometimes you can find a warm bike is harder to start. Or for some reason a warm battery is weaker (I have no idea why this is, maybe it's a coincidence?). I experienced a similar issue last summer. I'd ridden plenty of miles, but spent probably the best part of an hour in traffic. The bike was very hot, and when I parked it, it decided to stop of it's own accord. The starter turned over so feebly I doubt the crank actually managed a full revolution. So, I went off to do what I'd gone to do, came back to the bike a few hours later and it fired up like nothing had ever been the matter. I have since done significant replacement and mods on the charging system as per the usual methods, ie direct charge to battery, new crimped and soldered joints everywhere and new connectors on both the reg/rec and alternator. So far, so good....

I guess first things first, have you at any point done a charging system check?

As said do the charging system check and report back your findings and I've no doubt the gurus on here will have you back running for some more trouble free biking.
You got there in the end before so keep the faith :rocks:

I think its only about 200 watts or so which is less than the 350watt of the NC30.

There is a possibility its a lower power regulator and wont be able to handle the load of the NC30 electrical system.

As above though, full charging system test first.

If you said you moved it about and it suddently fixed itself it does sound like a bad connction somewhere but start with a full charging system test.

What voltage are you getting from the above test. Whats your battery voltage before starting up
