Aftermarket plug caps??

Post by pip » Tue Mar 26, 2013 6:32 pm

Hi all, it's been a while as I have been busy working on my '91 VFR 750 project.....

Anyway, I thought I'd have a look at the plug caps on the '30 (the bike has an occasional misfire/stutter) - past experience has shown that it's usually the plug caps at fault (internal corrosion causing high resistance = misfire).

Unusually, the ht leads appear to be soldered onto a plate inside the cap. I only found this out after "unscrewing" them (the HT leads), the end of the leads have broken away from the plate (which is rusty & manky anyway). Obviously, they won't reassemble....

Q; Does anyone know of readily available 5k ohm plug caps that will be a good fit onto the nc30 - I'm thinking from the car world (plentiful & cheaper than bike stuff), I want new rather than used & would prefer something with a rubber cap that seals the cap/rocker cover.

Many thanks in advance....

Pip

I'm pretty sure Rick Oliver does replacements, I can't see them on his stock list though, just fire him an email.

Cheers for the replies,
Luke, do you know if the caps that Rick sells are the 'normal' readily available anywhere NGK caps (8238/8072) or ones that have the rubber cap in place, do you know if they are straight or 105* bend?
There is a chance I could refurbish the old caps - they have an odd design whereby if the lead is pulled out even just slightly contact will be lost with the resistor.....

Cheers, Phil

Ok, after a bit of meddling I have managed a suitable repair of the old caps, so fingers crossed.

As an aside, I'd strongly recommend everyone to test the resistance of the plug caps during a service on an older bike - It's surprising how many have heavily corroded internals to the caps.
On the '30, both pairs of caps showed open circuit when tested with a multimeter, now repaired are within specification.

Ricks are NGK, but are very similar to the originals i.e straight rubber cap. Well, I'm assuming the ones I have one there are the originals - they might not be, but I wouldn't know!
