for some reason, i can only think i didn't select the gear properly, it jumped down from 5th to 4th when i was about halfway through the gear which obviously wound the engine right up, I can only think that the valve springs on the back right hand cylinder must've been weaker than the others as the valves on that cylinder hit the piston, completely mashed the piston head and barrel... i would repair the engine but because the barrels scored the parts are only slightly cheaper than a new (used) engine, so going to either keep it for spares or split it right down and sell the good parts on... bit annoying though!
Engine isnt repairable if there is bore damage as far as i know. So it jumped out of gear and dropped 2 valves? Makes me a bit worried as mine will jump out of gear on the odd occasion

Hmm, weird, I was planning to strip the old engine down for parts so I can check the gear assembly for any wear or anything that might be causing it if that's any help? save you taking the engine out yours... but yeah, was overtaking and changed up into 5th, got about halfway through the gear as i said and it just dropped down... which then because of over revving (I guess) knocked the heads off two of the valves and mullered the inside. I'll stick some pictures on in a sec
Anyway - Picked up a new engine yesterday from another '89 nc30, so plan on checking all that over in the next week, repairing some of the cracks in my fairing and giving it a respray between now and christmas. Thanks for your help everyone
