When changing the thermostat 19300ML7003 that that opens and closes the second cooling circuit, what consumables are needed a gasket or sealant perhaps?

You may very well also need the housing to engine o-ring. Certainly on the NC35 it's as near impossible as makes no difference to get at innermost of the bolts that hold the top of the housing on. Not sure if the slightly different frame arrangement makes any difference on the 30. Seem to recall the Haynes shows a pic of a thermostat housing in place with the top off, but buggered if I could get at the second bolt.

On mine, this one had turned into just a tiddly bit of black gunge!

I put a thin smear of gasket sealer around the housing to make sure the top seal had no chance of getting out of place when I fixed it back together. I didn't bother between the engine and housing as the o-ring is fairly chunky, and has far more to hold it in place. Be very sparing with the sealer, my missus' car had the stat done by a previous owner who used tons of the stuff, and the stat was half blocked with it as a result!

What sort of sealant, silicone semi-hardening?

It's usually described as instant gasket or gasket sealer. The sort of stuff you'd get from any car/bike parts shop. I don't use it to replace or fix seals (although you can if you really want), I just use it where you really don't want the seal to shift when you're fixing the stuff back together. To be honest, it's not strictly necessary, and some people will probably frown on me for suggesting it. However, I figure there's no harm in having a bit of extra protection in places where it's a right pain to get at things to fix them.
