NC35 tank overflow

Post by speedy231278 » Thu Aug 30, 2012 9:20 am

This is going to sound a silly question for someone who has owned the bike almost 10 years, but I've always been slightly curious as to whether or not the tank overflows from more than one place or not? The reason for asking is that as far as I'm aware, there is only one drain, and that's the hole an inch or so away from the filler opening, and the little rubber part right next to it is the breather. Whenever I fill the bike up, and I'm one of those who sit on the bike while I do it, I can spend forever squirting a little more petrol in and waiting for the air to bubble out, but I'm never sure how long I can keep doing it before it starts overflowing. The reasonable assumption is that unless it overflows out of the filler, nothing is going to go anywhere, however I'd rather next end up covering the bike in petrol! I guess having a fairly large flat top means plenty of air gets trapped in the tank while trying to fill to the brim. One one occasion I have actually managed to exceed the nominal 15 litre capacity at the pump, however I assume that the figure is the volume measured to the underside of the filler, and that as it is lower than the top of the tank there's an air space in there to allow for expansion due to temperature change? One day I might get around to measuring it, but it's not exactly a high priority!

Also, what is the right path for the overflow and breather hoses to take? Mine's never been fitted with the latter since I've had it, and whenever I've tried fitting an overflow that actually reaches the bottom of the bike, it always ends up getting cut to shreds by the chain.....

i fill mine on the side stand.

AFAIK the overflow is as you say about an inch from the filler hole - i.e. if it overfills the hole then it drains out.

My overflow tube (and one or two others) pop out by the sidestand. Not sure what route they take to get there.
