Temperature guage not working!

Hi just a quick one, I noticed my temp guage wasn't working so replaced the sensor but still no joy! Just wondered if anyone else has had the same problem or if there is a known fix for this? Cheers, wayne

I've had problems with mine too. Mine keeps going to full scale defelction when the engine is just luke warm. I have replaced 3 sensors and it keeps doing it. I suspect it may be the gauge or the wiring to the gauge.

As described in the haynes and Honda Common service manual, if the temp gauge swings from C to H when the sensor lead is momentarily connected to chassis, the meter is ok. Note ignition must be ON and sensor lead should not be connected to chassis for longer than it takes for the meter to reach the H mark.

If no temp meter movement then check wiring from sensor to temp meter If wiring ok then meter must be dud.

Temp meter ok then the sensor can be tested by inserting it in boiling water and measuring its resistance.

50 C 130-150 ohms
80 C 45-60 ohms
120 C 10-20 ohms.

Thats a bad earth somewhere, most likely nothing to do with the sensor.

Which sensor did you replace? Not the fan switch one right?

I've replaced both at the same time! I figured I might aswell! I'm guessing its a bad connection somewhere?

Yep, or the gauge is knackered.

Shouldn:t be too hard to figure out.

The temp sensor is the small one by the thermostat housing (ball shaped thing bolted to the engine with rad hoses going in and out)

Theres only one wire, if you disconnect this, firslty make sure its not all correded and crappy.

Next, earth it to the frame, (with the igntiion on..) if the igntiion gauge goes straight to hot then theres a problem with the temperature sensor.

If not you need to follow that wire to the gauge and make sure its not broken or cut, check it with a meter. If it is ok then the gauge is probably knackered or has a bad connection.. there is only 3 wires to it If I remember (power / earth and the wire from the sensor) so wont be hard to check!
