No spark

Post by buckrabbit » Sat Dec 03, 2011 3:29 pm

Hi all,
The story so far,
My wife (bless her) bought me a Honda CB1, it ran fine apart from slight problem with carbs
cleaned carbs all hunky dory, parked her up till last week, uncovered her (the bike not the wife)
charged battery, new fuel, tried to start her, turned over great but wouldnt start for a while,
finaly started but wouldnt rev properly (kept dying ) then very loud backfire through exhaust, After peeling pet cat off garage roof and mopping up coffee tried her again she refused to start at all.

so new battery and plugs fitted, no spark, worked through service manual indicated faulty spark pack
changed pack still no spark, rechecked all tests in manual
results all within range battery showing over 11.6 volts on turning over
whilst on my knees praying to the great mechanic in the sky i noticed the Reg/Rec looked a bit cooked
opened it up it looked more cooked, could this stop it sparking?
also i noticed the tacho wasnt even twitching on turn over
can anyone help please
Regards Buck
one very pi**ed off born again biker

Latest update
new Reg/Rec fitted, made not one bit of difference still no spark
my thoughts now
if i have one dodgy coil that still meters out OK but is breaking down under load ,would/could it affect the other coil?
still cant get my head around the tacho not even twitching on turn over,
is it all linked, or am i missing something
Regards

hi chap ,

i dont own a cb1 , but had similar problims with my nc30 when i first got it , i first checked all the earth points on the frame and clocks , as if these are poor or lose can casue these probs , then i checked spark plugs by taken 1 out at a time then put hd coil on end and other end of spark plug against the engine case to check for weak or strong spark , by turning the engine over for sec or 2 , if that makes sence , you say ur change the reg/rec so thats not that , but if above when checked is all good then might pay to chage the cdi as these can break down over time ,
hope this is any help to you
cheers spud

I have a 94 nc31 and I have been having a similar problem with no spark. I go for a ride and it runs fine , turn it off and it will not start. I found out that the pick up in the pulse generator area was the problem. I found this forum for you. http://www.hondacb1.org/forum/index.php?topic=1099.15 also make sure there is no corrosion or bad connection on the wire that comes from here. I have photos if you want to pm me.
