Rad fan dismantleing

Post by jay3 » Thu Jun 23, 2011 9:56 am

my radiator fan is rust central, obviously not the fan itself thats plastic, that would just be silly. But all the metal is regressing back to iron ore.

Managed to get the main unit from the surround, but want to get the electric motor bit out of the metal case, so I can soak that. Any ideas ? When the main unit is away from the surround the back comes off and you can see the motor, it spins up freely, and it does (did) work. I don't wanna force it, in case I'm forcing it incorrectly, and then break.

What should I do.....

What about aftermarket ones ? I have tried but cant find anything. What about a PC fan ? probably would get too hot with it being between rad, exhaust and engine.

Thanks in advance.....

hold the fan still, with you hand holding the blades,

8-10mm socket undo the nut, anti clockwise,

pull the fan off

the metal top hat under the fan blade needs prising off with a scrwdriver bit by bitdo it 12, 6, 3, 9 o clock.

remove the felt thats behind it

remove the little circlip

unscrew the motor from the fan bracket 3 x 10mm nuts, maybe rusted on :(

undo the 2 or 3 m5 phillips screws on the back of the motor,

at the bottom where there is a square drain hole get a screw driver inthere, and pry the cases apart

it maybe stiff there is a white grease/silcone sealant, these cases will be held by this and MAGNETISM

makesure you dismantle this bit in a clean area with no metal dust about etc

done

refitting is a the same as before but a little trickier as the brushes are a bugger to push back in due to the shape of the armature, youll need 2 pairs of hands for this, i got the mrs to help
