Headlights dim when indicator turned on!

Post by evason2011 » Fri Jun 17, 2011 10:37 pm

hi everyone,
i have a nc23 1988 which has failed it MOT for dimming dipped headlights when indicator is turned on. I have been told that it is more than likely an earthing fault, so i checked all the connections that i could find and clean them all. i have even taken out the generator, regulator/rectifier and had a look at them. i was really desperate so i started taking apart the wiring harness, but all look good. Now i am at a loose end and would really like some advice on what else to check, or maybe someone else has had the same fault and could share their knowledge with me.

That is a strange one. Do the headlights get a decent bit brighter when you rev the bike?

If so, seems that your battery is poorly and the charging system needs a look at.!

Welcome to the site, am sure we'll help you out :rocks:

Yes they do!, i have tried attaching a 12volt starter pack to it aswell, to see if it was the battery, but it still does it. i have checked the battery when running and its charging at around 13.8 volts, but when i indicate it drops down to 11.8volts. maybe Reg/rectifier is not working properly???
Even when just the ignition is on it does it!
i turned on the indicator and pressed the horn and there is a distinct difference in the noise when the indicator comes on. i am totally puzzeled
i think i will have to sell the bike, i am gutted cos its my first bike and its great.
Please help me

You won't need to sell it...and if you did, with no MOT and with this fault you'll get fuck all for it.

It will be an easy fix...might cost you a regulator and a bit of time to check the earths and the wiring ut it is not the end of the world.

This place is superb..we'll sort you out!

Earthing fault?

Try swapping the indicators over to eliminate the actual unit.
