HELP! nc23 suspension bolt SEIZED!

Post by c7ll » Fri Apr 22, 2011 6:26 pm

Afternoon All,

The 8mm hexbolt that mounts the rear suspension linkage to the swingarm has nto only seized, somebody has rounded the head off trying to undo it. I'm guessing it's a case of driling out the bolt both head side and the other end that threads into the swingarm?

Any suggestions or tales of similar problems gratefully received!

Cheers,

C

you could try some penitrating fluid first and a slightly larger hex bit on a impact driver!? maybe a little heat too!? loosen things up....

Already soaked in wd40 for about 3 hrs but the bolt is now useless, looks like it has been attacked with a 10mm drill bit so nothing to get hold of.

REALLY don't want to change swingarms as this one has a handmade fabricated hugger built in.

Who do you go to to try and get it drilled out? I just don't have the resources for a job like that :?:

why would you need to change your swingarm? am i missing somin here? lol its just a seized bolt right! wd40 is a lubricator...not a real penitrating fluid. not for proper seized stuff anyways.

you may have to wait till another lad pops on and answers mate coz im not firmiliar with the bolt you mean, sounds important if you think you may need to change swingers coz of it....

a garage will sort it, but at a ridiculars price, money that could be spent on some tools for future seized bolts lol

if you can get to it, do what you said, cut a line down it and get a flat head screw driver bit n a impact hammer and hit it.....HARD

Problem is that it's recessed deep in the swing arm so you cannot access it to cut into it. can see no option but to drill it out buy my drill bits are not even making a dent in what used to be the head of the bolt.

Might be a case of doing the rounds around garages and seeing what they think.

ruddy seized bolts! - was all going so well up until then!!

Shock release spray is the best stuff to try , freezes the bolt so it contracts and penetrates at the same time

Drilling it out is going to be a pig. You will have to drill the whole length of the bolt, straight, and even then youre likely to stuff up the thread at the bottom. If it was me, I'd go disc cutter crazy and slice up the linkage and the bolt inside it. Cut two cuts, remove middle, tap out bolt head and remove edges. Once that is done there should be enough bolt stub left to remove using mole grips.

Actually if it were me I'd replace the swing arm as they go dirt cheap but you don't want to do that.

Well nothing to lose by trying it I suppose. Thanks for the tip I think cutting might be a better bet than drilling so will try to find a man that can!

Cheers

Chris.
