Does it rev past 5.5k, or up to this OK and then get nasty?

does it do it in all gears and at all speeds?

What carb settings have you got?

Are you running all stock induction (air filter, snorkel, rubber flap etc) ? If you can man, get your carbs apart and tell us what is in there- main jet sizes, washers under the needles and float heights. You never know what you'll find in there...
Yeah it made a noise like a tractor and broke the casing.

To be completely honest im just a have a go kinda guy and dont really know what im talking about when it comes to carbs and jet sizes. Would it be simple to find out if i start taking it all apart or am i best off using a mechanic!!

I would say have a go yourself, better to know the how things work ;)

So whats happening?

I would suggest that you go back to standard, standard filter jets and flap and pilot settings. this should solve any issues with the carbs.
