NC30 stalling problem

Post by hksooie1 » Sun Apr 10, 2011 8:52 pm

Took the bike out for a ride the other evening and all felt fine whilst out and about. Eventually rode through town and stopped at a set of lights. Once I pulled the clutch lever in, revs started to die and eventually engine stalled. Pushed bike to side of road and tried to fathom out what the problem might be. The bike is starting and running fine with no issued, however, once you pull the clutch in, revs start to die and will stall unless you give it plenty of revs. Got the bike running by giving it loads of revs whilst pulling clutch in and managed to ride it home. My initial thought is that clutch cable may be due replacement, not replaced it in the five years I've had the bike! If that doesn't cure it, next step is new clutch plates.
Am I thinking along the right lines, or completely barking up the wrong tree?
As always all suggestions much appreciated

You are trying to describe revs dying off due to a dragging clutch? Are you gear changes heavier then normal?

I'd think your battery is probably more likely potatoes, and the higher revs are compensating for the drop off in voltage at tickover. Check your battery voltage and see where it takes you.

Battery had been on optimiser until I took it out and that was indicating ok. Is it worth checking with voltmeter aswell? bike is idling ok, only drops off when I pull the clutch lever in.

Hmmm, perhaps not the battery. Wouldn't do any harm to check the voltage after thirty minutes of no loads at all to make sure it is totally open circuit voltage - about 12.8 volts indicates its fine. Ideally, you can "maintain" it on the charger, disconnect and check after 30 minutes or more.

Optimisers are okay, but they are only as good as the voltages gained while connected. Ultimately, they're never smart enough to tell you a battery is failing under load. How old is the battery, do you know?

Its a tricky one for sure, but thats where I would start.

Battery is about 3 years old if memory serves me correct. Will check it tomorrow and see if its ok. Much appreciated Malc.
