Handlebar weight removal

Just a quick one , I want to remove the weight in the left hand handle bar from my bike to sort it out and straighten it up cos the bar end is on the p**s , the trouble is I cant see how it is supposed to come out . Has anybody removed one before ?

Plenty of WD40, a bolt in the weight and a good pull should do the job. They are only held in by rubbers.

Two small clips in indents in the ends of the bar, plus a rubber bung the other end...

These are a Royal PITA to get out!

The insides look like this:

as posted above, you have to release the two sides of the clip, then once that's done it's "only" held in by the friction of the two rubbers. If yours is "on the piss", then it's probably because of a bent screw, and depending how / where it's bent, it might break the inner weight once you start turning it. I replaced the screws with stainless countersunk allen bolts, tidier, don't rust, and allen keys won't round so easily. Do fit them with a dab of loctite though or you'll lose your weights.

Careful, they can break!

Remove handle bar and all its fittings externally - gently warm up bar with blowlamp - this melts the rubber retainers and out will fall the inner anti vibration assembly if tapped.

Never failed.

Fine if the inner weight is broken or you don't want to re-use it, but you can non-destructively remove an inner weight by screwing a long M6 screw in until it bottoms out, clamping that in the vice, undoing the clips and then leaning-to.
