Ultrasonic cleaning - What DIY cleaning liquid do you use?

Post by tanto » Tue Mar 29, 2011 3:15 pm

I'm tempted to buy an ultrasonic cleaning bath tomorrow. The question is, what's the best cleaning liquid to clean the carbs, clean some aluminum components, remove rust, and to remove paint from painted parts (& not remove paint from painted parts, while cleaning them)?!

I realise a different cleaning liquid ought to be used for each of these tasks. There are quite a few suggestions on-line, from distilled water with Fairy liquid, dilute white vinegar, coca-cola, dishwasher detergent + hot water, to citric acid, & more exciting options (kerosene, petrol, bleach!!!), & so on. Yeah, I'll skip the latter.

Given there's quite a bit of experience on here, I wondered what's been tried, and what worked out? I'm looking for DIY solutions. They sell the devices in Chiang Mai, but no liquid cleaner. :? Thanks.

A low strength dishwashing liquid solution is more effective than plain water, depends how much cleaning the items require.

I got one for me birthday, but not tried it yet. Got spare KLR carb to experiment with at the weekend!
Gonna try a few fluids out see wat happens i think, start with weak fairy liquid, and maybe washing machine powed.
Cheers

I use tap water with a just couple of drops of washing up liquid when cleaning carbs. Works fine with out causing any damage. Rinse with plenty of clean water and blow dry.
