Re: Regulator/Rectifier
OK I'll check this, but the bike appears to try and turn over, sounds like the starter is kicking in but not firing
If main fuse is dead, would I get anything?
Cheers

Re: Regulator/Rectifier
Right, after a break, I'm back at trying to get this bike back on the road.
New Battery ok
I bought a new charger as my old one couldn't get the battery beyond 12.3V, now charges to 12.8/13V
Used this charger on the old battery and it read 12.7V this morning so battery might be ok
BUT
Bike still won't f***ing start. I'm not one to give up, but it's getting close.
Could the R6 Reg Rect that I got be faulty, if it is, would this stop it starting?
Without putting the old Honda Reg/Rect back in, how can I determine if this unit is ok.
Maybe time to go back to basics this weekend - I'll pull the plugs to see if spark ok, check fuel is flowing

Re: Regulator/Rectifier
I'll bet plugs are fecked if anything. try and dry them.
Reg rec is not needed to start a bike - all total loss race bikes manage just fine without reg rec...

Re: Regulator/Rectifier
OK,
Had problems with fuel tube - need to get another, so fuel getting through and fitted new charged VARTA battery and:
Bike starts no problem - Battery at 13.6v on idle
When Rev is still sits at 13.5 / 13.6V - it doesn't appear to drop down to 12V as before but doesn't rise any higher which I was wanting to see, I though it would rise to about 15v then be regulated to stop there.
So to recap - I posted pics of stator and it looked fine - I did all the measurements - resistance between 3 phases and voltage measurements - all ok.
Decided to replace Honda Rect/Rec(this was a new one - not even a year old with Heat-sink) for an R6 model as recommended on this forum - did the mod with the wires to fit
Bought new Varta battery as recommended on here too but looks like the charging isn't working right still
I suppose it's time to check stator again?
Any ideas?
This must be the longest repair in history - - I'm now determined to get to the bottom of this

Re: Regulator/Rectifier
David, one of my nc30's has very similar symptoms (low voltage readings).David wrote:I'm now determined to get to the bottom of this
My battery is good, reg/rec is a good R6 unit (have swapped with a known good one and same symptoms), generator readings are fine, earth wiring all checked, etc.
I'm now going to fit a different standard loom. I suspect there is some sort of resistance within it causing a voltage drop. It has been a bit butchered over the years so am wanting to fit a complete standard loom. I don't know if this will solve the problem, I'll inspect all plugs on the loom for damage prior to fitting and use electrical contact spray on all connections also to ensure good connections.
If this doesn't help I'll probably take a look at the generator, even though the readings are in spec. I have a spare to try if necessary.
Yes these problems are frustrating, but keep at it it's simply a machine after all!

Re: Regulator/Rectifier
Hi,
sorry if i been slow on the up take but wats wrong with the charging system now? 13.5volts is plenty to charge the battery you wont get a constant 14v out of a reg/rec there not that acurate, it will be charging your battery as long as the volts dont go below 12v and not above 15v(overcharging and nakers batteries fast!).
Sounds fine to me mate, my nc sits about 13.5v with an R6 reg and goes lovely, just keep an eye on it and see wat happens, but i really wouldnt be looking for more, your meter could be out by that much anyway!
Cheers
Ian

Re: Regulator/Rectifier
Big delay in the reply, as I had fuel issues as well which I got help with in another Thread - this is all ok now.
Put bike back together and just got it back from MOT - passed ok so charging appears to be ok so far - only been for a couple of short rides but have left a few days between rides which before would have given me problems. So hopefully all fine now.
Thanks for the help.
The chap at the garage where I had the MOT done said there was a slight misting on the left hand fork but not enough to fail MOT.
I have looked online at videos for changing oil seal on forks
Is this a big job on the NC24, just thinking ahead when it will need doing - they will charge about £70 for one seal.

Bike on front stand, wheel off, fork tube off, replace seal, reassemble.David wrote:Is this a big job on the NC24, just thinking ahead when it will need doing - they will charge about £70 for one seal.
It's fairly straight forward, if you have the time and the tools don't pay for it to be done!
