NC30 Frame Metal Layer Flake

Post by Spherian » Sat Mar 26, 2011 3:47 pm

Hi,

On my NC30 frame, a layer of metal on the left engine hangar started to flake and come off. I'm not exactly sure what is happening here and have never seen this happening to a bike frame before. I was thinking of getting the frame clear powder coated, but would like to solve this flaking issue before I do anything.

Shown are two images. The flaking area is bordered in red. The layer comes off pretty easily, too. Anybody know what's going on?

Thanks for any input.

Hi, I am no materials expert, but if the issue is only at this point rather than other areas on the frame i woudl think it's an issue with the metal on that part of the frame. It also looks like it is inline with the engine mounting hole, at sometime in the past someone could have put the engine mounting bolt through and had it off centre and hit it through damaging the area affected, if that makes sense?
Cheers

There's no white powder if I rub on it. It's a metal layer that's peeling off like a layer of paint. Basically like tin foil. Interestingly, there's nothing wrong on the other side of the frame. No chipping or flaking at all.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Should I just completely peel off that layer, clean it, then have it powder coated? It will be hard to peel off the layer seeing that that layer is between another frame plate, but I can peel off as much as I can.

I'm no expert either, but I think it looks like anodising is coming away - scrape off the loose stuff where you can before powder coating, but otherwise nothing to worry about I would think. I had it happen on an NC35 I once had, I didn't worry about it at all and nothing bad happened.
