Hi everyone
Having a pleasant ride out on my 93 Super Four last week and after about 25 miles of perfect running it suddenly gave a loud backfire and stopped - broken down. All electrics seemed very weak and when pushed seemed as if it was firing - just about- but as soon as I opened the throttle fractionally engine died. Had to get it recovered and dealer is saying it ran on two cylinders when he recovered it. Says he changed the plugs and it would then run on all four but no power. Also said it smoked heavily but he has compression tested and all cylinders are OK so he says not mechanical. He says the two cylinders not running didn't match the pairs fed by either coil so he is baffled.
I wonder if it's the (or a )CDI ?? Anyone have any experience of this type if failure at all please ? I'm not sure if the Super Four has one CDI or two, or even where it is actually.
Funnily enough I was warned that the regulators go on this model so I changed mine a few months ago as it seemed to be showing voltage surges judging by the lights, and a slight acidic smell from the battery but I thought the light was showing signs of surges in brightness rcently so I'm not sure if it's getting a consatnt voltage. Coulkd this have killed the CDI i wonder ?
Anyway if anybody has any knowledge and is kind enough to advise me I would be extremely grateful for your advice.
Thanks again and best wishes to all members ... Alan
