The smaller carbs may have knocked a couple of horses off the top end, and the standard muffler is a lot more restrictive than the nc30 muffler. The rest of the exhaust system is probably slightly better flowing than the standard nc30 system, it certainly looks it. At one stage my nc30 had an nc35 standard system and muffler (for reg purposes), and the lack of power was incredible.

I doubt that the ignition curve was modified to achieve a lower power rating (which would have been the easiest way to lower the power rating) as nc35's with decent mods and standard cdi make good power.
Also, I suspect that the rvf engine makes more than 53hp stock (most dyno figures are at the wheel etc)....

nc35's can be brought up to 'full power' (and more) by fitting a good exhaust system and muffler, and jetted to suit. Simple.
