Winter Additive

So as it starts to get cold I'm thinking about adding something to the fuel tank to keep everything in order.

As I'm not riding to work at the mo, all I'm doing is taking the NC30 for a little runabout every couple of days to keep it ticking over. But soon enough there'll be frost and ice about and I'll probably only be starting it up on the driveway once a week.

When would you start to think about using additive in the tank? What to use- Wurth?

although Vpower isnt recomended for low compression engines its a worthwhile shot to run a few tanks nearing the winter, so that it doesnt tarnish everything.

im sure others will disagree with me but the detergents will stop the dreaded "carb glue"!

theres detergents in standard fuel too though which people seem to forget.

The problem will happen if you don't store your bike correctly and the petrol has time to evaporate in the carburettors, it leaves behind a sticky residue of the chemicals that were in suspension in the fuel.

Best thing to do if your not using it for more than 3 or 4 weeks would be to turn the petrol tap 'OFF'

Drain the carbuterretors. This is quite easy, theres a drain screw at the bottom of each float bowl. Attach a small piece of flexi hosing while you drain it.

Unless it is going into winter storage or is kept somewhere damp outside and not being run the following are not necessary but i'll note them anyway.

Fill engine oil and petrol to the top, this stops condensation getting in.

Replace fuel
Drain the engine oil and replace.


Note: after draining carbs it'll take a bit of cranking to start as fuel has to get in.. follow 'dry' carbuerettor starting.. full choke, no throttle, 10 seconds of cranking to 3 minutes of battery rest and it'll go.

Personally I only ever drain the float bowls as my bikes dont get laid up longer than 5 or 6 months before there run.

or start the bike for 15mins a week. let it idel dont rev it for 10mins, and makesure you treat it to an optimate.

have had optimates fry batteries twice. now using cteks and no problems. waterproof and nicer looking too

funny you should say that, thats what i got and use! i just call it an optimate its like the brand hoover now isnt it.
i also have a tech 7 one!

have used profi-fuel max in all my bikes when laying them up over winter it claims to be a fuel system cleaner and stabiliser but as has been said modern petrol contains detergents anyway so it may be just another snake oil potion on a recent tv programe they tested over the counter octane boosters and everyone one of them actually gave a decrease in power over normal unleaded fuel.
