NC31 Wiring Loom differences

Post by Nik101 » Tue Sep 14, 2010 4:59 pm

Hi, was just looking for a bit of help from superior powers on what on earth's going on with my wiring loom!

Basically, my bike had fried the starter relay, and was refusing to show any signs of life. Plug all melted etc. But rather than fixing myself, I let my Dad do it, and he plugged the relay in backwards, so that live went to earth and earth went to live, smoking the entire loom. (I'd have done it too, the plugs fitted exactly, only one was upside down!) My bike's a 1997 CB400 Version S.

I ordered a new loom from a slightly older bike, '94 I think, and it's been shipped off along with the bike to a friend who's a bit more savvy with electrics.

I'm told that the new loom is missing 2 connections to the CDI, which appear to run to the carbs and tell the position of the throttle slides. Mate's insistent that a new loom, identical to the original is required, but I can't for the life of me find one, and I was just wondering why can't we strip that section from the old loom, and splice it into the new one? The CDI connector taken off the fresh loom, the connector from the smoked loom spliced on, and the 2 wires to the carbs added?

Any help on this would be great! I start Uni in a week and don't fancy bussing it everywhere for extended periods of time!

Ta, Nick.
