NC30 Sump
Hi all.
As I was changing the oil yesterday, I found a crack around the sump bolt area. I'll have a replacement sump cover soon but is there anything I need to look out for when taking it off? Can it be removed with the exhaust still intact and any tips on taking it off? It seemed to be well stuck on there. I removed the 12 bolts and used my trusty hammer and it didnt budge. Maybe more force next time.....

The exhaust has to come off. Well, not all the way off. You can remove the rear and then loosen the front headers and swing them out of the way. The sump has to drop down far enough to clear the pick up and screen, which sits fairly close to the bottom of the sump.
As for getting it off, I really hope you used a rubber mallet, and not a regular hammer. This can damage the sump. Some good whacks to the sides should loosen it up, but again, only with a rubber mallet.

I dont own a rubber mallet so I wrapped a normal hammer with a tea towel and went to town. It came off eventually. I wasnt too bothered about the sump cover getting damaged as I have a replacement coming. I removed the front headers and twisted them out from under the sump. There was a lot of black/plastery stuff around the joins on the exhaust that crumbled off. What is this stuff? Im guessing I'm going to need some more to seal it when I put it back together.
Also, how would you remove the oil filter without the proper tool?

That black stuff is sealing paste. You don't HAVE to have it when it goes back together. I have a TSR titanium system that is held together with springs, and I don't use the paste.
The best way to get the oil filter off is to use a strap wrench. It won't damage the old filter, so no mess and you won't have to worry about damaging the threads on the block.
If you are crazy, you can hammer a screwdriver through the filter to gain leverage, but you run the risk of breaking the threaded pipe the filter screws on to.

I've managed to get hold of a strap wrench from work so the oil filter is sorted. What do you guys recommend for sealing the sump with? Will this do? http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165691

I also think you should use the gasket. The less sealant used the better. There is always a chance of it squeezing through the mating surface and getting into the oil then clogging the screen on the pickup. You don't want to restrict oil flow to that motor!

I used sealant a few weeks ago on a sump, never again!
It started leaking soon after so have since fitted a proper gasket.
