NC-29 instant dead

Post by LUGNUT » Sat Apr 24, 2010 11:03 pm

Was at the track today and my NC-29 was running perfect then just died instantly on the throttle at 12-13k RPM. Motor turns over fine, pulled one of the plugs and there was no spark. Any ideas?

Thanks

OK

Sorry if you already know this but there is an electronic limiter behind the clocks on this bike that because of Japanese law limits the bike to 180KPH (112.5MPH)

On my girlfriends bike this restrictor failed a couple of weeks ago and you may be experiencing the same issue, however it is not clear from your post if you are having the same issue but you might.

Below are the symptoms that also happen up at the top of the revs because of the restrictor

1. You loose power and one cylinder does not fire.
2. The bike runs rough when you hit the limiter and you get popping from the exhaust as un-burnt fuel from the cylinder that is not firing is burning in the exhaust.
3. Poor acceleration when the limiter is activating.

The below is from other web sites and is NOT a recommendation from me on what to do but suggestions for what to look for. BE VERY CAIRFUL about messing with the electrics as this could render the bike almost inoperable.

In my girlfriends bike the restrictor behind the clocks failed and it thought 5000RPM was in fact 180KMH so the restrictor cut in. This has now been fixed by our mechanic and all is working again.

Much of the below is not me but just a copy and paste from the web.

Speed restriction:
Speed restriction is administered by the CDI unit, on the 400's there is a sensor built into the speedometer which triggers upon the bike passing 180 km/h. As far as I know this restriction is only on the 400's.

Characteristics of speed restriction:
bike will power seamlessly until it reaches 180km/h where it will sound rough, the CDI at this stage cuts the spark to certain cylinders, prohibiting acceleration.

Removing the speed restriction:
A lot of people ask how to remove the speed restrictor on the CBR 400, I usually ask "Are you mad?" in response. But seen as there is the demand for the information I will provide as much as I can.

The speedo contains a sensor, which appears to be like an infra-red or light sensor. On the rotating axle of the speedo there is a disc which has a notch on part of the outside of the circle, this notch passes through the sensor when the bike hits 180km/h. Part of the de-restriction process is to stop this sensor being triggered.

The next problem is that the CDI does not see the sensor information anymore.
This I'm am unclear about but I have heard that a resistor can be used to fool the CDI into thinking that it is getting the appropriate signal from the sensor in order for it to operate properly. One of the wires is a signal wire and it is possible to short this to a 12V+ wire which will give the CDI the required signal, to enable free revving.

turning the bike in to a track day tool?
if your talking about just unscrewing the speedo cable from the speedo.. the restriction will remain "bypassed" as the wiring is still plugged in to the ECU/CDI sending "i'm still here" signals.
if you remove the whole speedo from the dash, you will render your bike useless past 30mph/5,000rpm.
you can fit a small by-pass MOD and remove the speedo from the dash.
you can make one your self.. or buy a pre-made kit. both come with instructions on how to fit etc.

inside the speedo is a light/beam trap switch. a disk attached to the needle inside the speedo cuts the beam at 112mph.
what then happens is a signal is lost/stopped to the bikes CDI unit telling it to cut power to two spark plugs. this signal will continue to be cut all the while you try to go over 112mph. once you drop under it, the signal resumes and the CDI powers all 4 plugs again.
Some times bikes have hic-ups with the limiter. this is often caused by bad by-pass wiring, loose wires or more commonly the fuse for the *dash*, indicators, lights has blown.
when this happens the CDI no longer receives the "i'm here doing my job" signal and automatically shuts down two spark plugs as soon as the bike revs over 5,500 RPM.
there are a few by-passes:

1) remove the disk from inside the speedo so nothing cuts the beam, leave sensor plugged in to loom.
2) fit a Resistor by-pass in the main loom behind the dash, unplug speedo from loom.
3) fit resistor by-pass next to the CDI unit, unplug the speedo from the loom. *cant have the 2 working against each other*
4) if you have KPH reading speedo, fit a manual KPH to MPH converter. your bike will NEVER get to 180Mph where the limiter to send the signal now sits!!
5) a few Ozzy racers have a bodge where they cut and re-wire the CDI limiter wires together...
6) a HRC CDI unit has been fitted....
petrolhead19, i believe you may have number 3, 4,5 or 6 on your bike to allow you to unplug the speedo from the main loom and rev over 5.5K rpm.

Hope this helps.
Tristram.
