ok, 'new' plates in, all back together.

first thing was i had to adjust the cable, as i pulled the lever in it went right back to the bar and i thought...oh no... what have i done wrong, but after adjustment the cable felt really good.

cranked her over without a spark to move the oil around, then with a spark - she fired first time again, let her warm up then sat on her and engaged first. she 'moved' forward, only when i selected first, once she was in gear didnt creep forward or anything else. so i started to let the clutch out and she was biting at about 15 - 20mm from the lever normal 'resting' point.

she would pull forwards with no issues, but as i would pull off she sounded noisy from the around the clutch plates area. i am happy with the amount of oil i have put back in, but will check in the morning once she is cold again just encase.

is there anything i could have done wrong could the amount of oil being causing the noise if it is the wrong amount?

The clutch assembly is quite complicated, its possible something went back in wrong, maybe open up again, and re-install the components & look for damage from that sound you heard.

the noise i heard sounded like a rumble - best word i can think of to describe it.

it wasnt there before i changed the plates, but as mentioned she is biting better and pulling away far easier but the noise is concerning...

is there a likely symptom to this type of noise?

did you file away at the clutch basket at all?
sometimes if you go crazy with the metal file it can make the clutch grumbly afterward

never touched the clutch basket, it was actually very clean. i do however have another from the used clutch i have managed to get for very cheap, so this is one item i could change to eliminate that. but if it did not make the noise before with worn plates, would new (ish) plates cause a different noise?

all i have done so far is replace the friction & steel plates, put it all back together as before, fill her back up ( have checked the oil level ) start her, let her warm up and then put her in gear.

she goes back in to gear a lot easier than the original clutch did, but as then let the clutch out to pull off she is very noisy like she is running on no oil. very rumbly like a ducati?

i am aiming to get back in the garage sunday morning and strip her down again.

though i am sure i have torqued the nut back up correctly when i did it, if i was to get this wrong - too tight or loose could this be a possible cause?

i have got all sorts of thoughts going round in my head and it wont get any better until i get back in the garage and can open her up again. i am happy the new plates are working as she now bites as a 'normal' clutch would but just dont like the noise she is now making?

right. sorted.

have had the plates and basket out three times this afternoon. just could not work out what was causing this, so in the end i changed the pressure plate from the original one to the 'new' one that came with the used clutch.

put her back together again and sorted. no strange noises, rattling or anything. really weird as there was no difference between the two of them at all that i could see or measure...so either there was something different or i did something different putting it back together ( cant think what )

any how i now have a working engine with transmission! woo hoo!

just front brakes, lights, undertray, pillion seat cover, rear shock to go before mot time!! (in theory)
