Sagging Rear

Post by DoktorMandrake » Wed Dec 09, 2009 10:52 pm

Rear on my NC30 is sagging down v. low. So low I reckon my fat arse could cause it to ground the tyre on the undertray if not careful.

Rebound damping on the shock appears to be nice and healthy (goes down quickly, but when the bottom adjuster is set to hard it returns v slowly. Is there a compression damping adjuster anywhere? Couldn't see one. Only the rebound at the bottom of the shock) but I don't know how much preload is left as I can't get the top lock nut undone to wind it on even though I have tried a selection of various drifts and plenty of wd40. Any ideas? I am thinking judging by how low the rear end is that the shock is fucked but had intended to try winding the pre-load on a bit and seeing if that made any difference and firmed it up a bit.

It's likely shagged. No adjusting will help it out.

Right... new one it is then I s'pose. Well second hand. Where's the best place to get one is? Know places like MCT refurb 'em so is my best bet to buy a second hand one off eBay and send it off to get sorted or could I actually get a decent usable one second hand off eBay or better still on here?

Shameless self promotion?

I'd take it off your hands it I had a spare £60. Unfortunately, budget dictates I get sumat a wee bit cheaper and less cheerfuller as I'm out of work til the new year. Thanks anyways though mate 8-)

Its kinda dangerous to ride with a shock like that! Sounds like you at least need a new spring (you can try and increase the preload but that would only get you so far before you run out of adjustment). The stock shock is also very badly designed (as told by my suspension guy), the air bleeds into the shock very easily and the air bleeder on the shock is next to useless and dont work. You will also have to considered that even if you manage to bleed the air out and stock shock will let air back in very quickly and will require much more servicing than an aftermarket shock. One way of telling whether you have air in the shock is to push it down and hear whether theres air in the shock (should have subtle whistling sounds).

I have recently put a Penske shock in my bike. Much better feel and feedback compared to the stock shock (but my stock shock was full of air, so go figure). I would recommend a good quality aftermarket shock, but of course that would depend on your budget. Longer serving interval, better shock action....etc, etc.

Personally, I think setting up suspension is the most important mods to do to a bike. You will be able to ride much faster and much safer with properly set up suspension.

Cheers for ya reply, mate! I know the stock NC30 shocks even if they're in good condition are getting on a bit now. Shocks generally don't seem to have a very long life. Swapped the one on my gix at just over 20k miles as damping was fooked and my CBR before that needed attention around the same mileage. The one on my original VFR was completely shot and I ended up with a Hagon replacement. However, my current VFR I bought as I love 'em and miss having a bike that handles that well. However, I skinted myself buying it and only justified its purchase as my winter hack/summer '10 resto project to save the gsxr form the salt. So I need to get it back on the road a cheeeep as poss. Which means that unfortunately as much as I'd love a Penske I couldn't afford anything like that at the mo. Agree decent suspension is the key to fast, confident riding, and once I can throw some money at her in the new year I'll get her a Penske or sumat like that that'll really sort her out. However, at the mo, just need a cheap shock that's in a wee bit better condition that my old one so that I don't ground out the rear wheel. Jacknell/Kev has offered me a few so will scrape some pennies and get one from him methinks. Oh and I'm gonna go have a listen see if it's got air in it then might try to find the bleed, see if that helps, even temporarily.

Eden... where's the air bleed on the standard shock and what's the procedure? My shock makes a lovely pneumatic hiss when I bounce hard on the rear end so I guess she's fucked.

Have wound the preload right on - took plenty of wd40 and a bigger drift. Wound damping right up and seems better but won't know til I test ride her which I wasn't gonna do in this weather...

The bleeder is a hexer key nut located at the top of the canister (at least it is on and NC35, my suspension guy believe that the same system is used on an NC30 but i dont know where it is). Also I am not too sure how you do it, as my suspension guy was just telling me how they dont work. Sorry I couldnt be of more help.
