Magteks
How much would you expect to pay for a set of magteks to fit the rvf400. I know a few of you have them fitted and wondered what you payed. I know a bloke who has a set but wants 1200 US dollars for em, which seems steep.

I can't commnet on the rears but the last 2 fronts I payed £150 each.

I have a set on my bike, and considering the are a magnesium alloy AND they are 17", $1200 USD delivered doesn't sound far fetched to me at all.

A set of new Dymags can cost as much as $2500 USD. Maybe even more with the poor exchange rates these days and higher cost of freight.
Magteks are good wheels, but they are older and I believe narrow for today's rubber. $1200 USD is about 1/2 the cost of the Dymags, but are they new or used? Magnesium (Mg) is a very testy metal. If it has any white chalky areas, the bare metal has been exposed to air and oxidised. That's really bad with Mg as the metal tends to crumble like dirt once that happens.
Mg is also limited in cycles. It will fatigue faster than Aluminum (Al) which can cause stress cracks. Unlike Al, when Mg starts to fail, it isn't apparent, then it's all at once...."BOOM" the wheel can disintegrate.
Be very wary of purchasing used or old Mg wheels of any kind. If they look new and show no signs of corrosion, oxidation or cracking, then $1200 USD is a good price and you should snatch them up before you miss the chance. Otherwise, play it safe and but new direct from the manufacturer.

good condition fronts retail for around £175-£250 and single side rears sell from £350 upwards (very hard to get hold of though)

there are a very nice wheel and to get a pair around £500 you'd be doing alright but what i'm a little curious of is how well the 3" rim would cope ,or am i mistaken and a 3.5" can be got.
It's not having what you want but wanting what you've got....Loud ,Proud and Modified ....

You can get 3.00", 3.25", 3.5", 3.75" and 3.87" magtek fronts.
The common ones are 3" and 3.5" but I've got a 3.75" sat here. Bit wide for most things though.

It's a shame the £ has lost so much value against the dollar or i would have snapped up em up. These wheels now cost £300 more than they did a few of months ago. The price is without shipping, repowdercoating and the customs fees will be ridiculous. Think i will wait until summer or try to. The other option is a magtek rear from japan but by the translation it may have been deformed slightly in the past and has been repaired and is perfectly straight now but can not be sure with these translation sites as alot are utter pish. What do you think, yay or nay ?

It depends which ones you buy.
The NSR road magteks are only alittle lighter than the stock enkies, around 0.5kg each. Dymags weigh less than these.
If you have HRC magteks tho they are almost half the weight of the road magtek but of course are designed not to be used on the road. These weigh also less than Dymags. A HRC Magtek 3.5" front complete with bearings etc comes in at around 2.2kg.
I use HRC magteks on all my bikes and so far have had no problems with them were as I have had two Dymags crack despite the dymags being heavier and for road use. Too many pot holes on Devon and Cornwall I guess.
