NC30 v NC35 Rear Fender

Post by RVFmal » Fri Dec 08, 2023 10:02 am

Is the rear fender of the NC30 the same as the NC35?

I am aware that the subframe is different, but based on the exploded view of the rear fender in the parts catalogues, the fender itself seems to be the same.

The unit on the NC35 donor bike has had the license plate section chopped off and am looking for an OEM unit to replace it.

Fender? You mean the undertray? Assuming you do then best of luck finding an uncut one.

Yep, the undertray. I have found one, that is why I am asking. Not going to fork for a NC30 unit if it is different to the NC35.

As far as I can tell, from photographic reference, they are the same. It does look though that the plate/indicator hanger is a separate piece?

Upon closer inspection also seems to be a difference where the seat fairings close over the rear of the undertray.

I have an uncut (ish) NC30 tray and an NC35 subframe and am fairly sure they don't work together.

I am going to have to buy an uncut subframe for my NC30 I think as mine is currently chopped up for racing and I cannot restore my standard road panels to it.

When I find a cheapish (or a loaner) NC30 tray, will test fitment with the NC35 subframe.

The NC30 and NC35 undertrays are different. Which is part of the reason why the NC35 undertray is so elusive and bloody expensive when you do find one. Very rare to find an uncut one. I was lucky and found one on ebay in 2021, in excellent condition. I paid £300! Yes, mad I know.
There was a cheaper one out there recently but it was cracked in several places and badly plastic-welded and stapled together.

Just in case you don't know, the reason most of the imported 400's have had their reflectors, plus part of the guard, cut off is to accommodate the huge UK numberplate. Japanese plates are smaller. UK plates don't fit easily with the reflector in the way, so importers lopped them off, never thinking how valuable uncut undertrays would become. I've got a slightly smaller-than-legal number plate, which I've fitted using longer bolts through 15mm aluminium spacers, sitting between the guard and plate. This holds the plate far enough out to clear the reflector. It looks fine and my MOT man has never questioned it. I did the same with my NC29 after I managed to find an uncut undertray (I even have a spare!).

This all means I now have a CUT undertray for both the NC35 and NC29, in otherwise very good condition, for sale at a very reasonable price.

We have the same issue here in South Africa with regards the license plate sizes (hence the same issue in respects of the cut undertrays). Having said that, there is little regard for the laws regarding plate sizes and bikers locally (regardless of motorcycle) discard OEM license plate holders and put all manner of small sized plates on aftermarket holders.

There was a seriously good one on Yahoo this last week. Missed out on it in the closing stages of the auction.

I have an OEM unit that is a bit shabby, but will do until I find a decent replacement. Bike is currently in various stages of restoration, so not going to need it right now, but hoping to have it completed by the end of the 1st quarter of '24
