Hello All
Just bought a lightly damaged 1990 Cbr400 NC23 (pic below) to fix up over winter as a bit of a project
I have been looking through the forums and really like Drew70's race bike so iam thinking of doing the cbr600 fairing swap (mines staying as a road bike though) but also seen some restored original fairings that look really smart too - so cant make my mind up at the mo.
Any howwww, on the none body work side of things would you guys say are a must mode wise, and what mods would you recommend i do for better power, handling and stopping. Cmon guys get me fired up!
here she is

Hi there, congratulations on your purchase!
If I were you I'd look at the suspension. If you still have the standard spring/damper at the rear that would be my first port of call. CBR600 shocks go in there with a little modification to the linkage, not 100% sure which model but I'm sure someone here will put you straight. Secondly Racetec do good fork internals for your bike, I know you can use different tops to give pre load adjustment, but again not sure which model.
Depending on how far you want to go and what your budget is the options with what you can do are endless. One of the most crucial things to these 400's is carburation, so thats where I'd be looking next.
You can upgrade the brakes but that either requires adaptor plates or using different fork bottoms, a good clean and grease, drain and bleed with braided hoses will have you stopping like the best of them.
No matter what route you go down there's a pretty good chance someone on here will know enough about it to point you in the right direction, so get your nose into the Haynes and dont be scared!!
Hope that helps,
Marty

you really need to go to a breakers and measure the shock between the eyes for yourself,as the length changes from year to year...i think its the F3 rear shock and the measurement is 280mm between the eyes,
the custom dogbone from graeme is around 80 pounds and unsure what he charges for the linkage...but u can get that 2nd hand anyways
best you speak to the man himself,as i did the conversion years ago...and prices may have changed
also note..with the linkage and dogbone, your then open to put any big name brand shock into it...like an ohlins or summin
depends how much bling your after
front ends are simple only req some decent springs and oil change..up to 15w.
fit a 17in nc29 rear wheel in.
the front wheel is optional
have fun

now stimpy with fitting the nc29 rear wheel will it affect the speedo on the bike? as the nc23 rear is bigger than teh 29 rear.

i cant really say as i dont ride a 400 on the road, but from what i have heard...its very minor under 5% diff
the bonus with going to a 17in rear tho is greater tyre choice.....handling

Did you buy the bike from a breakers in Todmorden?
I looked at one that looked exactly the same but decided on my NC29.

Hi Buddy,
Yep thats the one from RSmotorcycles
I did go to get the silver/black/green NC29 that was on the website but i had gone when i got there - is that the one you bought? damm you if it is! lol
Nah, worked out kewl anyway only paid £400 for this 23 which i dont think is bad at all really as its in pretty good nick for its age and the crash damage is hardly anything

Yep, I bought that one. I looked at yours as it seemed to have been better looked after but when it ran it made a right racket from the exhaust.
I wasnt sure if it just needed a new gasket, new exhaust or what. Decided to go for the NC29 instead. Hope you enjoy your bike but I think we have our work cut out getting them near mint again.
