Hi, just after some general thoughts on this and to see if anyone has experience doing it.

Ok I have a set of R model pipes which are a tad different from earlier 29s and the link pipe containg the baffle has been cut off and replaced with a stainless straight through pipe. This is the part just under the gullarm right to the can. Im really just wondering if anyone who has done this mod has noticed any difference at all. It changed my bike from a bike with 3 definate steps in the rev range to an absolute smooth power curve. very strange when your not used to it. i wasnt sure at first but to be honest my bike pulls better i think and the smoothness is amazing. more ride time to be sure though.. waits for good weather. :whistle:

there is no baffle on any 29 system other than in the end can.

hmmmm.. well thats what i was told was there. I do recall a cutaway picture of the pipes that did show some sort of baffle, will search it out when i get home. I also have a new spare set of R model oem pipes lying around will dig em out and bung something down the end and see what i come up with or not. It is strange how much better the bike feels though.. changed nothing else.

I thought all the exhaust systems were the same between the nc29 models

Nope there was a difference to the R model pipes as there are lots of minor differences as you know, I believe it was to help with power at mid range but not certain on that. You can see a visual difference to the down pipes if you goto the link I show below from cmsnl. The downpipes are a lot thinner and when you see both set of pipes together the R model set looks comically thin when your used to fatter pipes, or as my mate in his James May persona put it "awfully thin" note in the pics where the pipes meet the collector there is a visible step down compared to earlier pipes where the pipes did not have this step. Funny though that they do this then restrict the bike to 53bhp by other means..

Right I have more tests to do with a small camera but very quickly this morning stuffing a tape measure down my full oem set around 6" in there is something, more like a baffle plate than say a full baffle but there is something there. Further down seems quite empty, so either this is the so called baffle, that maybe not there in earlier pipes, can anyone check?

Lets just say maybe if nothing is there or changed internally from earlier pipes I have believed the hype.. But, the bike IS dfferent now for sure.

These are off mine and there is a step down near the collector but they did look to have been on for a long time before we got the bike way back in 2005

great pictures.. yep those are L or N pipes. I have cut a section of your photo to show the external differences with the R pipes, note where the pipes fit. But as its the inner that is the confusing bit, can you tell me if there is a plate further down the link pipe section?

EDIT... here is a photo of whats 6" down the pipe. not a great picture but until i can get a smaller torch i cant get the vid camera down there, cant see what else is down there. Is it the same for the L model?

I couldn't see anything down the link pipe section, i wonder if that is indeed some sort of restriction to get the power down

Well if you cant see anything similar down there and it is easy to see in good light being only 6" down, I guess im not going mad after all :grin:

Does look like another R specific item then, also looking on the back of the oem linkpipe there is also an obvious spot weld, no doubt keeping it in place. So there seems to be truth in this rumour I have propogated.. Now know why my oems seem different from the stainless unbaffled linked section pipes.

RRR model headers are completely different - narrow down pipes ---- great smooth power. (likewise - gearbox / sump / pistons / rods / carbs ... I could go on..)

All OE headers are baffled at the back - look for the spot welds.

Removing the rear section on RRR headers to remove the baffle ... fit custom GF link pipe .... as good as you can get without going full race.
