hi chap , i would say give rick a called and speak to him about the nitron shocks he sells , think they start at £355 and come in sport , track ,race , models , and come set up to ur weight and bike , i know a couple of people who use them and they only have good things to say , rick uses them on his own bikes ,

I've used a Nitron before and it was a top bit of kit. I've just put a Wilbers on my current bike and can say that this is a cracker too. The Nitron look very bling too.

Nitron Race are great shocks but with the hydraulic preload adjuster there about 750gbp.

Are you aiming for track days or just an improvement over stock.

What's the best option in the range of £150-£200?

I was thinking of having the stock shock rebuilt instead of hacking a 3rd party shock in there + cutting the battery box etc.

For that price your looking at a refurb of the original or a second hand Hagon probably. Re cutting the battery box etc to fit an aftermarket shock, you don't have to. My Wilbers slots straight in, no clearance issues as its built for the bike as are the Nitrons etc. If cash is your priority then a refurb may be your option as if you buy a second hand aftermarket unit this may need refurbing anyway. Personally I'd save up a little longer and get a new unit, you won't regret it. Depends what you want to use it for too, if your pootling about on the roads or getting out on track etc.

I bought a used but just rebuilt Ohlins for £300. It's transformed the bike. When you have a decent damper setup you're never left thinking you need to fiddle with it. It's compliant, yet firm, not harsh. does everything it's supposed to do.
My reasoning was the std unit is understood to be undersprung. Mine wasn't in a bad state at all but a rebuild and new spring was £180. So I took the used Ohlins option. when/if I sell the bike then I'd remove the ohlins, it'll always have a £300-350 value so long as it's not leaking ( they're fullt rebuildable) and refit the standard shock.
I'd go for a good used ohlins, maxton, wilburs than a hagon or a rebuild on your std unit. I've no experience of Nitorn but from what guys say on here it's a worthy alternative to the Ohlins, maxton etc which are in a different league to a rebuilt std unit. so much adjustability, which is why the race/track boys use them

Lurvly Ohlins!!! Yeah, your right, the aftermarket now are far superior. I use mine a lot on track and they absolutely transform the handling (as long as the forks are reworked too). Night and day is a good description of the difference.

Well worth saving up a bit.
