Cooling fan Seized! Does the Rad need to come off to look?

Post by marty400 » Tue Aug 26, 2008 12:52 pm

Hiya All,

NC29, CBR400rrn.
Cooling fan Seized! Does the Rad need to come off, to take off the fan?

I've tried dousing in wd40, and leaving overnight - to no avail! either a Stone chip is stuck in there well and good, or the FAN is completly bageled! The fan can move a little either way. It dosesn't rotate at all.

Haynes Manual says the RAD needs to be removed, to get to the FAN.

Taking off the Rad - does it route past the exhaust headers ok, or do they need to come off as well?!?!? :(

Hope you can advise!
Cheers
Martin

PS:
How did I find out? Was stuck in heavy traffic, and notied the temp guage itting the red zone!

if the temp was getting to red zone, the senor may not have kicked in yet. mine kicks in just before it touches red.

maybe your sensor is buggered, Haynes does tell you how to test it. do this before the fan its self. also check all wiring to/from the fan/sensor.
can you rotate the fan 1 whole rotation?
does it feel lumpy as it turns? if so that can be normal in some fans as they use magnets to turn.

i know the Rad swings forward so you can (supposedly) get to the spark plugs.. see if you can get to fan this way.

You should be able to access the bolt points without removing the rad completely... if not by undoing the bottom mount then by also undoing the top mount bolt - there is enough play in the hoses to move it forward by a few inches.... ;)
