It's not good.
No rev limiter so if you downshift gear too much engine will blow up.
What do you want new unit to accomplish? Bike won't make anymore power with one, or a HRC one

Re: Derestrict CDI NC 30
so, if you change down and the engine wants to spin at 20,000rpm, hows a rev limiter going to help exactly?

Re: Derestrict CDI NC 30
you asked if the engine wants to spin down at 20k yes ? well the NC has a primitive limiter clutch which will not allow that.
cdi makes no difference to the clutch operation? or maybe it does on your bike - who knows

Re: Derestrict CDI NC 30
CDI rev limiter will save engine from excessive rpm when under power. Over-rev by down shifting will cause NC30 semi-slipper clutch to operate and reduce tendency to lock rear wheel, but magnitude of down shift over-rev could still be detrimental to the engine.
So, rev limiter cdi could cause a blow-up from downshift and no limiter cdi a blow-up from either a power or down shift over-rev.

It isn't.scooble wrote:didn't think that the clutch was part of the CDI - but what do I know?
You won't prevent a mechanical over-rev if you downshif too many.
The rev-limiter will still kick in but if your trying to spin the engine over at 25,000rpm it's going to fail.
A slight downshift (say one too many) or a miss-shift where you hit a false neutral and the rev-limiter in the ignition box will still kick in and may save your engine from damage, it certainly will help in the case of a false neutral, as anyone who has hit a false neutral at WOT will vouch for after hearing the engine pinging off the rev-limiter...
One two many downshift and your still in mechanical over-rev teritory but the limiter will be stopping you from applying even more throttle, so if it survivies the over-rev you wont' make it any-worse by continiuing to feed it fuel and ignite said fuel.
