Lockwire , how do i do it

Post by marcus57 » Thu Sep 22, 2011 5:22 pm

I want to lockwire the rear sprocket nuts, seen it done on some ducati's and think it looks smart.

Do i have to drill the sprocket studs or do i wire it around the threads tight to the nuts?

You could drill the studs/bolts this way [RC30] and perhaps wire the R clip too.

Not sure where you are getting them from, but maybe you can request for some pre-drill the ti nuts/studs for you :?:

you wouldnt generally lockwire a nut on a bolt, more likely split pin that. a union nut or a bolt threaded into a component. better off with a split pin

although if its just for looks, might as well just drill a hole through the nut and bolt and go through it

Echo what others here say, depends why you want to do it........ although the examples in the pictures are showing some of the poorer wirelocking I've seen.

Generally if the nut or bolt that needs locking doesn't have a hole in it to thread the wire through then I would drill a suitable hole. Suggestion would be to use a dremmel for this...... and don't anti-wire lock it.

Here http://www.byrongliding.com/lockwire.htm is a good guide to wirelocking, while it's easier to achieve a nice peice of wirelocking with special pliers, it's quite possible to do a good job just twisting it up by hand. Just be careful not to stab your fingers or stick a bit up under your finger nail.

Give me a shout if you want more info.

Hi mate,

I'd have to answer your question with another question. Why are you wirelocking a locking device?

If your concerned with the R clip falling off, use a split pin. there's no need to lock a locking device.

I haven't looked at the way the sprockets are held on, I'll need to have a look at mine when I get home tonight. However I thought the nuts were nyloc nuts, if they're not then the nuts can be wirelocked to each other. I can't remember off hand how the bolts are held, if they're loose fit then the heads would need locking also.

You don't generally lock the ends of the studs, it's ineffective. I'll have a look when I get home later. To see the best way of doing it, why do you need it? Racing regs? Or just to look nice?
