Rear Shock- no middle-priced option?

I've been planning to improve the rear shock when winter kicks in and the NC 30 gets SORNed, but I'm undecided as to what to do:
1) Get the original shock off to Brooks' and get it re-furbed for £100-150, OR
2) Get Rick-O's kit for £340, or a Hagon/Ikon/Nitron for £300.
Option 1 would improve comfort by a little but not a lot, and option 2 is a huge amount of money for me.
Excluding mods (I don't have access to the kind of tools needed), is there really no mid-priced alternative? It'd be hard to justify a top-end shock when I don't race and don't trackday. All I do is gentle commutes of about 15-20 miles each way. Looking around though, there doesn't seem to be a medium option.
Any thoughts?
