Need some serious HELP - Ealing - West London

Post by biga1 » Thu Aug 11, 2011 2:02 pm

Hi All

Having some issue's with my NC30 and really need some guidance and help - Ive got issues with the charging system and the fuel need to know how to fix. Tried to do the usual tests but none the wiser - So if anyone's got a bit more know how and is based locally could really do with someone popping over and giving us a hand. Theres a few beers in it for you.

Cheers

Alex

Hi Alex,
When you say 'issues' what do you mean. Is it charging? What's the output from the alternator? (There is a guide on here I think)
Have you changed anything yet? On my last one I bit the bullet and replaced the battery, alternator and reg/rec and had no issues after that. (Piece of mind costs about £150 in that area)
Regarding the fuel, is it getting through to the carbs? Have you checked the plugs are they damp?
Does it actually start and run?

I'm in Chessington so not a million miles away...
Cheers
Matt

Hi Matt

I have only just bought the bike and therefore only just become aware - mechanically minded when it comes to bikes.

The bike charges to full capacity - I can then ride it out at couple of times - If I stall it - then battery goes flat but am still able to push start it. Have doen this twice - fully charged it!

I have tested the battery with a multimeter and it is producing the correct voltage when when off and when rev 5000rpm, I have not tested the alternator - Not sure how ? cant seem to work out how to test the reg/rec as cant get the connector block off and not sure if im doing it correctly - am I gonna mess things up. I have just bought a new battery but before I put it in I would prefer to know if I will kill it because of crappy reg or alternator ?

The fuel issue could be related - When I first bought it only after 5 miles the bike cut out even tho there was still some petrol in tank switched to reserve but bike wouldn't fire up ! Put a tank of petrol in and it started first time and everything was fine. Only did 80 miles same thing happened again - cut out could still see petrol in tank switched to reserve but nothing filled up and away she went. I am yet to investigate the carbs and plugs not sure I would know what im looking for really - when comes to getting fuel thru them etc !!

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated - Really wanna get out and ride it :)

Cheers

Alex

Does all sound a bit odd. :?
Dodgy earth maybe? Have you checked the battery connections?
Alternator sounds ok if you've ran the 5k voltage tests.
When my reg went it did feel like it was out of gas, but it wouldn't then run at all as the battery was fried!
Fuel wise, check the breather line isn't being pinched anywhere.

Others may have some ideas...

If the reg had gone would the battery still keep fully charging ? Do you think its safe to put the battery in / I know the bike had been sitting for a long time so maybe the battery is just had its day ! If Im still stuck matt I will try and get out to you if your up for offering any more advice ?

going to be a dead or dying alternator this one I reckon.

pop the case off and have a look at it...you'll get a little bit of oil out but not a lot..

I'm no mechanic but the fuel issue looks like a fuel tap problem ie not swicthing to reserve

Agree with carpman, fuel issue sounds like a reserve problem. I get approx. 100miles on main tank & more than 150 miles on reserve, NC30s have large reserves. Seeing fuel in the tank is misleading because of the tank shape, fuel can be visible even after you have gone onto reserve.

Why do you think the battery goes flat, is it because the starter does not work if you stall it? If bike runs ok after bump start & you think the battery is charged then I suggest that the starter solenoid is the problem.
