Vfr400 nc21?

Post by duanebray_08 » Sat Aug 06, 2011 9:31 am

Right new to this forum and don't actually have a bike yet but I'm in the process of buying a vfr400 nc21. It's got powder coated wheels that haven't been fitted yet and will be mechanically sound an I'm buying it off a friend who is also a mechanic. Due to him being a friend I've also got it on the pay weekly. The engine is in the frame and that's it he's gotta build it all up from that. He wants £800 for it. Is this a good price? Are they any good? Common faults?? Thanks in advance. Duane

£800 is a lot but it depends on the bike's condition. One major question I would ask is whether it has a new rear exhaust/collector box as these do tend to rust as they are only made of mild steel.are expensive, and require a lot of work to replace

Too much!

Unless it's super-mint.

The NC21 as duncan mentioned can suffer from a rotted collector and they are expensive to replace.

The ride is also very 80's honda, soft.

The brakes and choice of tyres are also weak compared to newer bikes and limited tyre choice.

Solid engine though

Well the engine is in the frame and the rest of it will need putting together. The mate I'm getting it off will let me pay £100 a week till it's payed off. The wheels have been boxed since being powder coated and the Fairings have marks but don't think there cracked or snapped. And he's gonna put a full MOT on it after building it all up. He's a mechanic at my local breakers where I used to work and I know it will be running mint. And if anythings wrong he will always be on call. I'll get some pics up when it's all done so you can all have a butchers. Thanks for the info about the exhausts etc.

A lot for an NC21. I'd expect better mates rates.

I didn't pay that much for a fully working nc24.

the term shafted comes to mind for £800, for what sounds like a basket case one day bike , i.e. one day I will get it finished, I paid £350 for my nc24 which came with 3/4 of another one off a mate, as previous posts have said for that money you are able to pick an nc30 in reasonable road going nick, sadly these bikes are old technology
for that sort of money you could buy something ten years or more younger with a better range of spares, so either bid him in the balls or look for a another bike, if still want a VFR go for the nc30,

as a point my daily hack is a gsxf 600 on a 96 plate 12000mls and I paid £700 2 years ago
