Relay mod for nc29
Hi, some quick questions for those in the know before I start the very belated relay mod on my bike, not being a leccy would need some positive answers before I start cutting.
I have an R model, who's wiring is slightly different from earlier models, see the pic link below for wiring.
So looking at it I plan to do the following.
Following the vsource instructions,
For pin 30 that goes to BAT5 on that page I plan to splice into the power from my high beam relay but it goes from the relay to BAT1 and the starter, no BAT5 on my bike.
For the Ground pin 85 I will use the one that goes to the high beam relay.
For pin 86 to the handlebar switch and 87 to the headlight I intend to cut as per my drawing on the wiring piccy.
Does this make sense? comments please.

No it doesn't make sense and it won't until you tell us what you are trying to do

prevent LHS switch gear from burning as we normally using higher wattage H4 bulbs. Since the switch not designed for the higher load, thats the function of the relay mod.PARUS wrote:What is the purpose doing this ?

Dave, I don't think the proper way to do this is by cutting the wiring. I just detached the wiring from its connector and tap the new relay wire from there.Durka Durka wrote:

Based on your wiring, the new relay supposed to be energized every time the ignition ON (since R model doesn't have headlight OFF switch), unlike the L,N model, which the relay energized in Low Beam mode only.

Sorry, I might not have explained this fully, I just assumed everyone would know what I was talking about as I seemed to be the only one in the forum who has not tried it yet. So just as I thought it was making sense to me Im now confusedand cutting and intercepting the white (ish) lo beam lead

Has anyone done this on an R model, if so tell me what you did please.. in easy English, no tech speak if possible as Im a bit thick.

Righty then. I presume you want headlights on permanently while the engine is running?
Your intended cut is fine but your relay connections are wrong.
You will need to connect:
*Terminal 85 to an earth point.
*Terminal 86 to your ignition live (while cranking the starter, this is the wire that is temporarily disconnected).
*Terminal 87 should be connected to the dipped beam wire from the headlight (the one you have marked for cutting).
At this point you have one terminal left, number 30. Ignore the white wire from the loom as this will not cope with the current, you will need to create a fresh supply direct from the battery.
Fit an inline fuse holder to the + terminal on the battery (the fuse should always be as close as possible to the power source). Then run a fresh cable along to whereever you have placed your new relay. I find it easiest to tape new cables to the existing loom. Connect this new cable to terminal 30 and fit a 15A fuse (or 7.5A fuse for a single headlight model). Done
Don't worry about this last cable being permanently live, nothing will get past the relay until the ignition is on.
If you're still not sure, feel free to pop over to Blackburn. I have all the gear to do the job, won't take more than an hour. Just bring your own bacon

Sorry, not sure why you mention I ignore the white wire for this, so to be sure. I was going to take the feed from the high beam relay, which is black with red stripe and also goes to the starter button switch (bat1) and headlamp/starter fuse, I know the colours in that pic are not to clear so want to get this right.At this point you have one terminal left, number 30. Ignore the white wire from the loom as this will not cope with the current, you will need to create a fresh supply direct from the battery.
Im on nightshift so cant look at this till the morning to see replies.

I personally wouldn't take a feed from the high beam relay. The cabling to that relay will only be designed to carry the current for the high beam bulbs. By adding the low beam, even though they operate low on, high off and vice-versa, there is the danger that the switching between high and low will cause a surge on that circuit. I would still opt for a completely independant supply direct from the battery as I said above.

the white wire (headlight) is connected by a connector from the main loom and switch loom.
i detached the connector, and tap relay wire (86-pin) to white wire (switch loom) and relay wire (87-pin) to white wire (main loom).
both white wires stay detached from their connector.
from my understanding, what u want to do (to the white wire) is the same thing that i did. correct me if i'm wrong.
