Set of 21 carbs there without the plate.

Sounds like your missing bits...

No i have a plate on there and its divided into 4 sections and no trumpets (no space for trumpets even)

Its all back together and connected to the tank for the 1st time in at least 4 months that i have owned the bike :)

Just waiting on the clutch part (cough cough lol) and then its able to be sent for a MOT

The NC21 should definatly have them.

Yours are missing, is it the standard Honda plate?

The velocity stacks actually squish up against the carbs and come through the plate, it is easy to think that there isn't space for them.

A Microfiche there of NC21 carbs. You can see the velocity stacks and how they attach... (part #26)

Oh and it won't run right without them, but you probably gathered that.

Do you still have your NC24 carbs? If you Have a look at how the velocity stacks attach to the carbs, it's quite fiddley, I think the stacks are different, will check. If they are the same you could steal them from the 24 carbs.

Took tank off again lol

Here are pics of the carb plate

There is no way in hell that trumpets could fit to this, Also the brass bits and the screws look like they have never been touched so i think its a standard plate on there

They look very much like vfr750 carbs to me, at least parts of them. :?:

That's not an nc carb top plate.

That's not an nc carb top plate.

They are what came with the NC21 and they do run the bike fine, just cleaned them as they were filty

All the carb linkage, the pipework etc all looks like NC21/24 carbs.

EDIT: IF these are off a 750 and have to change, i will just give up on this bike as i cant afford to mess no more, especially as i just spent a day cleaning the carbs :(

Pretty sertain that is a vfr750 carb top plate, nc21 carbs also have round bottom slides so they are not nc21 slides in those carbs.

BUT - I'd be very surprised if a 750 top plate fit on to any 400 carbs, and even more surprised if 750 carbs fit onto a 400.

What are the codes and ID number on the carbs?

Very strange, really interested to know what you've got there!

Are you sure Cammo? I'm trying to compile a list of NCxx carb specs so its all there in black and white :)

It looks like an NC21 plate to me.. i'll have to double check though..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VFR400-VFR-400-NC ... 43a014b2f3

^^ NC24 plate and stacks look just the same.

Image

chownsy.. the rubbers squash in between the plate and the carbs, look at your NC24 carbs.. take the plate off and remove the rubbers and you'll see it looks the same when there not fitted... (i.e. like they wont' fit)

I think the NC21 had flat-bottomed sliders.. its the NC24 that has the rounded ones.

It might idle ok but when its running it'll be really really messed up without velocity stacks. (hence why they original came with them)

To me it looks like normal NC21 carbs without the stacks fitted (no idea why there not there) maybe the bike was tracked and ran an open air-tray or something.

Not sure about anything at all regarding these carbs Neo! There are some differences which would point to them not being typical nc21/24 parts.

Looks to me like Chownsy's top plate is different to the nc21/24 plates if you look closely.

Chownsys intakes are smoothly radiused (nc21/24 are not) and they're also round (nc21/24 are not - circled areas in pic below so that rubber bellmouths can fit). Looks to me like there is no room for bellmouths either - the radiused design butts up to the carb face.

I have several sets of 21 and 24 carbs, I don't remember ever seeing a top plate like this on a 400! Could have perhaps been a difference between the faired and naked model though, or were an HRC part (not in the manual though)? :?:

The smooth radius and lack of velocity stacks looks similar to the style of the vfr750 rc24 top plate (RC30 carbs also have this similar top plate). The nc21's were around in the same age as this model 750 so it's possible that honda made a variant of this for certain 400's. :?:

Been thinking about this (slow day at work  ), and I do remember seeing some carbs like chownsy's listed on yahoo Japan a while ago. I remember this because at the time I thought they were wrongly listed as vfr400 carbs and that they may have been vfr750 carbs. I was probably wrong...

Perhaps this type of carbs were fitted to one of the nc21 models (R or Z) and not the other. Or perhaps only to the nc21 models used for Jap rider training?

More question marks. :?: :?:
