rear shocks

Post by meno » Sat Jul 12, 2008 11:06 am

hi guys , if this is duplicated many apologies.. pc crashed while posting it first time round.

i just got a 93 400 superfour after a 5 year break from biking, its in need of a fair bit of tlc so to save money ive decided to try find some generic shocks that would fit the bike untill i can afford some proper superfour ones (or a rebuild of my own.. which currently look like theyve been in the sea for a couple of years lol) i was thinking maybe some cx500 ones or something would fit ... any ideas please.

Oh dear, they are in a bad way aren't they?!

I had a pair of Hagon shocks fitted to my Super Four when I bought it, so I guess a Hagon distributor should be able to sort you out. They're not the best quality, but they should be cheap enough and they'll do the job until you can sort yours out, then (like me) you'll have a spare pair for just in case!

All Bike Engineering recondition shocks, and will sort out any rechroming and powdercoating if you ask them. Alternatively, the corroded parts should all be available from Honda, so you'll just beed a rebuild which (from memory) is about £80 for each shock.

Don't really feel qualified to comment on the handling, as I don't know what a fully sorted NC31 handles like! It all felt OK to me, felt planted etc, but the second-hand Showas (one of which is leaking!) didn't seem to make any difference as far as I could tell!

When I finally get them rebuilt, I'll be able to tell you!

Honda part numbers (for the rusty bits, in case you need them) are as follows:

Spring: 52401-MY9-003
Adjuster assy: 52422-MW3-601 and 52423-MW3-601

It looks as though the main body is corroded as well - it might clean up enough to be refinished, otherwise I guess you're looking at complete replacement units. Not cheap - could be as much as £200 each!

I have a Honda parts list (pdf if memory serves). If you want a copy let me know and I'll send it to you.
