laymans terms

Post by carpman » Thu Aug 05, 2010 7:27 pm

hiya all

temp gauge problems (not sure if its working)

can some 1 explain to me wot this means please it doesn't seem to make sense , taken from the haynes manual chapter 3.2 section 4 cooling fan and fan switch :-

9
if the fuse is good , remove lower left fairing and disconnect wiring connector from fan switch on left side of the lower radiator (got that). Using a jumper wire if necessary connect the wire to earth (got that).the fan should come on . If it does , the fan switch is defective and must be replaced. If it does not come on the fan should be tested .

Well mine came on when i earthed the fan switch wire . but what i dont get is they say it should come on but in the next breathe say it shouldn't

It says that if you earth the wire the fan should come on.

If it doesn't you need to check the fan more carefully as its a sign the fan is knackered (or a broken wire)

since that works you can skip that step as your fan comes on.

If the fan doesn't come on when the temperature gets up to the red your fan switch is knackered.

If your fan works when you bypass the switch the the fault lies with the switch.

Andy's explanation is spot on and simpler / easier to understand than mine.

The fan IS supposed to come on when you earth the wire.

If the fan isn't comming on when your bike is hot, but earthing the wire makes the fan spin the problem is the switch.

If the fan doesn' spin when you earth the wire the problem is with the fan.
