running hot and loss of power

Post by myheroduane » Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:53 pm

hello all, my nc 30 is running a bit hot i have fitted another rad as my last one was shaged, this one is a bit dirty im going to get it off on the weekend and in the dishwasher so hopefully that will help a bit. once it reaches about 120-150 deg. it starts to run like crap similar to the way it acts when it is running out of fuel. any input would be greatly appriciated. dave

Not supprised its running crap, it should run, when fully warmed up between 85 - 90C. Are you sure the cooling system isn't airlocked or your temperature sender knackered?

that isnt right. is the water pump actually working ?
take the cap off and rev the bike, does the level drop slightly and look like its moving ? it should
the thing on the lower rad is the fan switch, the temp sensor is on the thermostat housing (top right under the side cover by the relays.)
is the stat even opening ? remove it, boil a kettle to boiling and pour into a glass with the stat in, if it doesnt even open slightly the stats goosed. it should open at least 3mm with boiling water.
is the rad cap goosed ? replace it to be sure.
the usual problem is the bottom rad full of mud and clogged so it doesnt cool. but even then it should still sit at 90 when moving no worries.

checked the water pump and the fluid is moving with engine running. removed thermostate and the housing is empty. perhaps someone removed it?? radiator is in the dishwasher now for it's second cycle and cleaned out the fins as best i could. bike is back together running a bit cooler but not as normal so i think as it has never had a decent rad. she was cooling down better but running at about 120-130 after i went for a blast and let sit at idle .
