cheapest place to get piston rings?

Post by deano » Mon Sep 14, 2009 8:53 am

Hi peeps,
my nc30 is causing me a headache with starting problems so would like to give a engine rebuild with new rings and shells over the winter but when I called Tippetts Honda they were asking for stupid money like nearly £300 for a full set.

Does anyone know I can get them for a more reasonable price or if someone has a set that they are willing to sell then that would be even better.

Thanks

deano

Are you sure it's the rings? A compression test will tell you.

Valve clearances out of adjustment will cause hard starting.

Since I'm lazy (and can't be arsed splitting an engine!) I would just drop a good used replacement engine in...

compression test will prove as said, been down this road a while ago with the good used replacement and finding a 'good' one is hard, if you compression test befroe you buy you will probably discard over 50%, they are obviously getting old now and this is the trouble. New rings will make a hell of an improvement, dont let people who should know better tell you otherwise.

before you do fit though make sire ther is no ridge on the tops of the bores and hone the bores using a proper honing tool.

I've done the clearance and they are all IN. the thing started and would run for while and now it just struggles to start Ive been over everything. I have a compression tester but just waiting as I need spark plug tool as I have misplaced my old one so if anyone has one spare let me know.
