There is only one way to get to be fast (even as fast as the back 1/3rd of the F400 pack which in my experience is about the front 20% of inters, middle of fast at a typical TD) is to try bloody hard, on track, and ideally with faster people on similar bikes (i.e. race).
You shouldn't let anything you regard as poor early form put you off, no one except the occasional crazy teenager does anything except run at the back in their first few races at least and that's generally after they've spent a couple of years working their way up from novice to inters and probably to fast trackdaying.
