The update from me is that our man is concerned, rightly, with longevity and safety with these beig used in road bikes. He would not want to be responsible in case of any issues (however unlikely that would be)

Also, Felix has been reading the posts too so is aware of what we've discussed and he did mention that he thought Bike_nut was taking it on hence the slight delay.

I am dithering a touch on this and am not sure I wish, at the moment, to proceed.

The nice thing about this mod is that it is reversible. While riding on the road use the Honda system. Come a show or a trackday then fit the lightweight arrangement. Everyone is a winner!

Hmm, I see your point Mark. It is a tricky one...I'm not sure I'd like to be the 'tester'.
Is anyone up for doing any stress testing on the new setup?
I'm sure the hub would be able to take it, everything on these bikes is over engineered, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Once my rear wheel arrives (should be the end of this week) I will machine the hub and a nut to suit. Looking at the set up I think it will be strong enough, but will reserve judgment until I have the wheel and all the relevant sizes worked out.

Any updates on this? I'm interested in purchasing a nut to mount a Ducati wheel. I'm in the US, so I'll just have the axle machined here. Anyone know what the offset difference is between the Honda and Ducati wheels?

Just had a look at this, my instinct would also be concern on a road bike at modifying the wheel retaining mechanism in a way which can only weaken it....

It also removes the locking capability of the standard setup...... I wouldn't be happy.

You make the nut a left hand thread so it will tighten up instead of undoing itself. The inside of the hub is 40 so I am machining a 41x1mm pitch thread which takes out .5mm from either side which is not a lot of material coming out of the hub.

I think it looks cool, might be a nice place to save weight on a race bike.

However, The hub as standard has a bolt going through it, which holds the wheel onto the hub. With this mod you are changing the loading, now your asking the outside flange of the hub to do the same job.

I believe the sprung loads are transmitted through the pins on the mounting face of the wheel. So it's only the twisting loads to worry about. Can't remember the exact names of the types of force...

The left hand thread idea, probably works...... however I've not seen one form of transport that's allowed on the road with one wheel retaining nut/bolt without a form of locking on it. With a slight mod to the design you could fit a notched washer underneath the bolt head with a wirelocking tab on it, that would fix the problem.

Which would just leave the hub loading...... needs some serious looking at on how the forces are transmitted and whether it's up to the job.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I think it looks good. It just needs to be safe. ;)
