Any tips on what to look for when buying an NC30?

Post by Julesholling » Fri Jun 12, 2009 12:00 am

I'm going to have a look at an NC30 on Saturday  but have no clue if there is anything in particular i should look for on it?

Has anyone got any tips of things to check on the bike or what to listen for? Are there any known things that i should keep an eye out for on these bikes.

Sorry if it's already been posted elsewhere on here but i did a search and couldn't find anything (not even anything online coming close to a buying guide)

the regluators give up somtimes and can take the generator windings with them if not tended to early enough. the only real way to check is by having a look at the connector block next to the regulator which is on the right hand side of the rear subframe.

the lower rad gets filled with crap from the road and can often need replacing.

other than that they are pretty bulletproof, if the bikes been stood for ages, check the usual things

Allways wondered about how willing people would be to take the bodywork off when selling it. It would be the best way to see how clean it really is...but also the best way to disguise how rotten it is too!
Could also check bottom of the exhaust to see how solid the collars are. they're usually made from mild steel and rot away.

One tip that has stead me well over the years when looking for bikes, if searching ebay, first sign of any of the following just hit the "back" button on your browser and avoid stress later on.

Shit spelling. - not just the odd typo but really poor spelling and grammar.
Massive brightly coloured text (often in caps too)
The phrase "TROUSER FIREWORK" - shows the owner is still stuck in the early 90's and as such should be avoided at all costs. often used by car traders flogging a bike someones traded in.
The phrase "totaly original and not messed with" but clearly has bolt on tat or aftermarket fairings - clearly proves the owner is an idiot and devoid of any knowledge of the bikes apart from putting the key in and thrashing it within an inch of its life.
Needs minor jobs - can be bought for a few quid on ebay = its shagged out or rounded off and i cant be bothered or afford to fix it.
Only owned for a few weeks but now plans have changed = I bid on it when i got back from the pub pissed as an earwig, and i only bloody won it, and its a complete hound and i have given up drinking.
Never let me down = it has now, and its about to go pop unless i flog it quick
Only selling as i need to upgrade = my mates on thier R6's take the piss out of me.

I went and had a look at another (my Third!) NC30 a few weeks ago and what I saw amazed me! The person selling it told me that it had just been through an MOT.

I gave it a good look over and found that there was only 2 out of the 4 front axle pinch bolts in place, and there was an Engine bolt missing from each side of the Bike! Also, the bike had quite a severe Oil leak from somewhere, and had a stupidly tatty exhaust on it with a baffle that looked like a sheet of alluminium covering the end can, with a few holes drilled into it, and poorly at that!

All in all I cant believe it passed an MOT. the tester must have been completely Blind AND Deaf!!!

So the moral of this story i guess, would be to Check everyhwere for missing and Loose bolts as they can very quickly become a problem!
