VFR400 pillion pegs jacking point?

Post by tigerclaw » Sun Mar 10, 2013 7:29 pm

The pillion pegs have a metal section which extend toward the rear (which I suppose works like the heel deflector on the front pegs), but then they have a small section that turns inwards which doesnt seem to have any purpose unless its a jacking point but I dont know if it is strong enough to be used as a jacking point? Anyone know what its for?

You mean the small round peg bit at the end?

I wouldn't personally use that little round bit alone as a "jacking point" - but I have used the pillion footpegs many times for pulling the bike around, strapping it down to a bike trailer and even taking the weight of the bike by suspending it by them to the rafters.

So IMHO, don't use the little nobbly bits to support your pride and joy - but the pillion footrests on the whole are a pretty robust item.

You mean the handles to help you lift it up onto the axle stand?

NGneer, yes "the small round peg bit at the end".. I am stripping my bike at the moment and rebulding it.. after feeling how light those pegs are I am surprised that they take any weight :P Nesophist, I suppose they could work like handles (but thats more the bit which looked like a heel deflector to me) and then I suppose the little round peg would just stop your hand from sliding off the handle bit. Luckily I have a stand that fits in the axle and it rotates over centre, its easy to put it on the stand by yourself straight off the side stand (not sure if they are all like this but mine has a bearing in it so you can actually run the bike in gear on it... although that makes me nervous  )

NGNeer, random comment but we have a family friend who used to race a matchless G50... when he retired the team race prepped the bike and gave it to him... he had it at a trackday (along with some of his race mates with other classic bikes) I enjoyed push starting all of them, they had to bounce on the bikes as they dropped the clutch (to stop the rear wheel from locking) .... wuuuuum, brrrrrrrrrrrr

Tigerclaw - apoligies for the thread hijack (but you started it ;) )

I am not sure about racing one on the tarmac....but my dad and I actually started out using this one for pre 65 trials many moons ago. You get a lot of torque from the big 500 single so I can imagine it would be errrm ...interesting. To be honest it was like driving a tractor off road but it was really way too heavy to finesse around a trials course.

In the end it got stripped down and lived in various boxes in the old mans shed for maybe the next 15 years until I was between NC30 projects, pinched it off him and started to rebuild it for the road.

Started of as a genuine basket case, with things like only the hubs worth keeping, and the rebuilding around them....

I had got as far as rebuilding the engine, frame wheels and front/rear suspension, when work took me overseas again and I handed the rebuild back to the old man to keep going...

Hopefully when it is finished it will look something like this..

Ah you mean the sticking out part,

Thats to stop the bungee cords flying off if you tie things on the bike (after hooking them onto the handle part).

I did have the official Honda bungee kit somewhere that shows you how to attach them

Ngneer, thats awesome.... great to see an old machine coming alive again... I bought spares for my NC30 from a guy who was stripping an old one.. horrible to see a machine die.

Nesophist - shot for that, the bungee explanation makes sense (i laughed the other day on the tyga website where they spoke about their tail unit retaining the underseat storage... I reckon you can fit a small sandwich in there and thats about it... bungees make sense 8-) )
