Engine Overhaul

Post by Davez29 » Sat Apr 07, 2012 7:39 pm

Hi, due to my bike doing somewhere near the region of 40,000 to 60,000 miles Im wondering what I could expect cost wise to have my engine looked at and perhaps set up with valves shims, 2nd gear selector looked at, clutch and piston rings replaced. I could do it but it would be a slow process I think, but it would be nice to have someone more knowleable to be sure. Anyone sent their engine off, whats your story?

Would it be worth picking up another engine, bang that in for a bit and re-build your own yourself?
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

If you are not experiancing gear slip in second or compression loss then neither the rings or gearbox need looking at.
If you took a full weekend and took your time bothe the valve clearances and clutch are jobs you can easily do yourself.

I did think of geting another engine but I need reliabilty, just chucking an engine from an unknown source may prove more of a problem than its worth.

I very occasionaly (blue moon) get second gear miss when cold, could be my stubby toes, unsure.. I think with the milage maybe new rings would be nice and could do no harm and the clutch and shims while I can do them, and indeed have new clutch plates, it would be nice to get a pro on the job and do it right.. Dunno Im just weighing up the odds, see whats available, others experience etc..

I have seen CB-1's with over 100.000 miles without rebuild, my NC29 has 50.000 miles and uses no oil at all, well not measurable between oil changes. Clutch only needs replacing when it slips...

Don't repair if it ain't broke, never change a winning team are just some quotes that apair in my mind, it saves you money too!

Hi Jolan, yep bikes working fine, no oil burning or odd noises, clutch fine but as I look around it would be nice to have it sorted with an experienced mechanic, as although I trust myself to do it and would not bodge it, I would take longer than most to sort it, for sure. I would like someone experienced to check as It is my daily ride, usually 60miles a day, high speed riding. When it boils down to it the engine is the only part I cannot really be sure of, 10 owners, maybe 50000 miles ( I bought the bike with approx 35000 km/miles, its now 60000 km/miles, so I have added 25000 true miles to this) , surely a good look at would do no harm? In anycase its a winter job whoever does it.
