Advice wanted Marchesini/Magtek wheels Brembo discs

Post by madfish2001 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 7:15 am

Hi guys

I have seen these items advertised locally (I'm in Bangkok, Thailand) and I would like to gather a little information about them before I go to see the seller on the weekend. The advert had no writing or prices, just pics of the items for sale.

Any information you could give me on these items would be greatly appreciated.
(See the pics below please).

The seller is selling 1) What i think is a standard 17" RVF rear wheel.
2) A Magtec rear wheel (not sure if its one wheel, or a pair).
3) Marchesini rear wheel/s? (again not sure if its one or a pair).
4) Brembo gold discs.
5) Brembo black discs.

Firstly the wheels.

Does anyone here know anything about Magtek wheels? Are they worth having or not? (Only 200 g lighter than the standard wheel by the look of it) What would be a fair price for 1 second hand?

I've heard a little about Marchesini wheels before. I know that they are sought after and very expensive too.
What kind of price do they sell for second hand? ? Are they worth having on my NC30? Anyone know the weight?
The seller also posted a pic of what looks like the nut and a home made spacer for it too. Any info appreciated.
I think i remember reading something on here about Marchesini wheels cracking/breaking, anyone here remember that post? Or know anything about it.

Brembo black/gold discs. Does anyone know how much these sell for as new?
I spoke to the seller about these and the black pair are quite a bit cheaper than the gold pair.
Any info also appreciated.

Sorry for so many questions, I hope that one of the experts on here can shed some light on these items for me.
Did I stumble upon a gold mine of great secondhand parts, or is it all rubbish?
Looking forward to reading the replies.

the marchesini wheels are from a Ducati, the silver is a standard wheel from a 996 series, and not the real lightweight wheel so nothing special.
the black one looks to be from a multistrada, the spokes are slightly different and no ribbing inside would indicate again a standard wheel and not a special from a SPS or R.
fitting kit to take a 5.5" rim away from the swingarm would possibly move the wheel off centre.
why would you want a 180 rear ? it would ruin the handling.

magtek is from a MC28 SP, other is possibly from a MC28 SE, either fit the NC30 or 35 with no problem.
if going to a 17" rear dont forget to raise the rear ride height to compensate

Wow, thanks so much CRM.
Great info.

I will pass on the silver Marchesini and the black one too, as I don't want to go that large for the rear wheel.

I know the Magtec is a few hundred grams lighter than the standard Honda 17" rim.
Would you recommend it over the Honda part?

I'm edging towards the standard RVF wheel. I'm thinking of polishing the wheels on my VFR so I'm not worried about the tattty paint.

Any idea how much the Brembo brake discs go for as a new set (a pair)?

no idea over here or over there where you are.
why do you want a 17" rear ? can you not get good 18" tyres where you are ? in that case the standard wheel would be fine.

like i say you will need to increase ride height or it will look shit - and they look crap with a 17" rear anyway in my opinion only of course*

If you really must have polished wheels then forget magnesium, there oxidise overnight.

The dark inner brembo disc look like RS250 GP discs, fully floating, very good discs but not really for road as are cast iron, will rust and rattle like fook.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I've dropped the idea of buying the smaller 17" rim now.
I'm going to stick with the 18" rim for as long as Bridgestone keep selling the sticky BT090's here.
But I'm still going to polish them this monsoon season.

Abrmoto: I don't like bits that rattle and/or rust, so I'll give them a miss also.
Luckily, I picked up a (slightly) used pair of front discs locally for about 50 pounds last weekend.
