Comprehensive guide to NC35 ownership

Post by Ben_OB1 » Tue Aug 02, 2011 1:55 am

Hi all,

I'm new to this whole NC35 experience and I've been finding that there is lots of great information scattered throughout this and other forums that is invaluable to any new owners. It can be a tiresome process (its amazing what you stumble across in the process though!) to trawl through all of the various threads for those little gems of information. Plus there is a wealth of knowledge for how and where to source various parts.

What I would like to see (I'm offering my services here!) is an NC35 reference guide, a "Comprehensive guide to NC35 ownership" if you will, or a ready reference for those already in the know. Is there such a thing already in existence?

In order to develop such a guide there would need to be an acquisition of "other people's work" from within various forums, books, magazine articles, etc, but this would all be mindful of copyright (where appropriate), and properly referenced and credited to the owner. Hopefully Rick O, Jap4 and Paul (from Tyga) might be able to share some photos of their special bits and snippets of advice too.

I propose that a google-documents file be shared between the resident boffins to rapidly populate the guide before we polish it up with photos and diagrams, and make it available to all.

Quite a lot of this would also be relevant for NC30, perhaps we could cover both?

The topics would be something like this:

Engine - carburettor upgrades, mods, repairs, difference NC30 versus NC35, air box mods, tuning, air filters, secondary filters, oil filters, maintenance, camshafts (are NC30/NC35 the same?)

Transmission - quickshifter, different ratios NC30/35, clutch info, clutch mods, etc

Final Drive - Chains (suppliers and types) (incl 525 versus 520), Sprockets (suppliers and materials), ratios, covers, guides

Fuel System - fuel tank, reserve/on/off valve, vacuum lines, etc

Cooling system - radiators (upper and lower), hoses (rubber, plastic, colours), regulation, thermostat, fans, oil coolers

Ignition System - CDI upgrades, plugs, leads, coils, crank pickup, de-restriction, etc

Charging System - battery, reg/rec upgrades/diagnostics (explain and consider MOSFET and Series upgrades), wiring loom, connectors, generator upgrades/diagnostics (suzuki gen upgrade)

Electrical - Ignition switch, switches (rear brake, front brake, side stand, neutral), instruments, lights (HID not recommended and why), Indicators, upgrades (eg. 35W to 55W? add relay?? or is that NC30 only)

Exhaust pipes - standard, twin stack, SP1, different brands, stainless, ti, steel, spring (eg. Tyga)

Forks - options, replacements, internal upgrades, maintenance, setup

Shock - replacements, upgrades, ride height, setup

Wheels - widths, offsets, hub details (eg wheel bore diameter), replacements (eg. Dymag, Oz, RC30), colours, chain clearance, spacer kits, adaptor kits, wheel nut options, wheel nut pins

Tyres - options, manufacturers, balancing, pressures, repairs, etc.

Brakes - upgrades rotors, lines, calipers (direct fit for fireblade/CBR600/SP1, whereas NC30 requires adaptor plates), master cylinders (required for bigger calipers), pads, maintenance, line routing

Frame - headstock, aftermarket stem and triple clamps, swingarm (including sealing swingarm to prevent gunk getting in to the eccentric adjuster), eccentric chain tensioner, wheel hub, axles, frame

Fairings - upgrade options (chinese/tyga/silhouette/etc), original shape versus RC211V etc, mudguards, huggers, chain covers, mirrors, seats, tank covers (front/rear), induction tubes (standard ones), painting and popular colour schemes, fasteners, maintenance

Controls - rear-sets, heel plates, rear brake controls, front brake controls, clutch controls, throttle controls, left switchgear, right switchgear

Mods for racing - ram air tube, HRC airbox, HRC carb kit, carby tray, 520 chain, fairings, quick throttle mod, crash bungs, race tyres, CDI, tuning, adjustable shocks, water and rear brake reservoir mods, fluid catch tray, lockwiring

Tools - Required tools (eg. C-spanners, spark plug tool), OEM toolkit, special tools (eg. castle socket for swingarm bolt)

Accessories - Paddock stands, swing arm pivot stands (eg. Abba), head-stock stand, tips for carrying loads (eg. pillion pad luggage options, tank bages, etc for travelling long distances)

Service providers - Honda (Australia / UK), David Silver Spares (UK), Rick Oliver (UK), Jap4Performance (UK), Tyga Performance (Thailand), etc.

Cleaning - (existing guide)

Buyer’s Guide - (existing guide)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts?

Ben.

already started, and almost as comprehensive as your listing too.
welcome to join the party though and help contribute and compile and we can PDF it and stick it here for all to see / rip off / claim their own work ;-)

Hey that's great!

Happy to take you up on your offer to help out with the document you're putting together. how do we get involved? PM sent.

I'm just about to install a MOSFET reg/rec kit (the FH012aa conversion) so would be happy to start with a section on the charging system.

Cheers,

Ben.

Hey!

The Yamaha R6 regulator 1999-2005 is a great replacement for the Standard Honda one.

It's about 1.5x bigger and fairly bulletproof.

The biggest killer of reg/recs is an abused / old battery.

If the bike isn't used regularly and the battery doesn't have a smart charger being used at least one a fortnight (optimate et al) the battery condition deterioates.

Also harsh use of the battery, adverse weather conditions, inccorect break in procedure will damage the battery.

as the battery gets damaged it can't take as much charge as a new battery so the regulator has to burn off the excess charged produced by the genny as heat, this cooks the honda reg/rec which is tiny.

I can't recall the article but a hybrid mosfet / linear reg-rec overcomes the downfalls of a pure linear reg/rec as many of the newer motorcycles that are mosfet based use a variable electromagnetic stator to overcome RPM issues. (just incase your building your own.)

This guy seems to sell a interesting kit.

Never bothered though as I use the nigh on bulletproof R6 reg/rec as it's cheap as chips and used by many people on here
